Fined for Deceptive Practices in Walmeyer Case
Roy John Offermann was fined 150 dollars and placed on six months probation by Judge Maeys on July 18 1966 after being found guilty of deceptive practices for writing a bad check to R. & W. Market in Walmeyer on July 1 1966. He was ordered to restitution of 81 dollars.

Quarry Workers Ratify Contract End to Metro-East Strike
Four unions ratified new negotiated contracts ending a June 1 strike at East St. Louis Stone Casper Stone and Columbia Quarry firms. Local 1244 reports a 7.74 percent raise over four years plus fringe benefits. first-year Local 1244 members gain 25.14 cents per hour with 15 cent raises afterward. Twenty-year workers receive four weeks vacation and birthday holidays. About 200 workers impacted. operations to resume as workers are contacted.

Fluoridation Law Signed By Governor Kerner
Governor Otto Kerner signed a bill mandating fluoridation of all public water supplies in Illinois. About 6.3 million residents are now drinking fluoridated water, either naturally or via application. Sponsor Sen. G. William Horsley led the measure supported by the Illinois State Medical Society and the dental and public health departments.

The Monroe Council for Handicapped Day Camp approved plans at a July meeting led by County Superintendent Norman W. Beck. Camp runs July 24 to August 11 at Camp Wartburg with crafts, games, swimming and storytelling. Highlights include a visit to Grant's Farm and the county fair, with a pow wow closing event.

Mrs. Betty Carle of Dupo, 36, was struck by flying glass at 1 p.m. Sunday outside Moose Hall on North High Street. She was taken to Memorial Hospital for a head wound. Police could not determine the glass origin.

Scout Troops Return From Camp Joy
Scout Troops 319 and 320 returned Saturday July 15 from a week at Camp Joy near Carlyle. Thirty-one boys from 319 and five from 320 camped July 9 led by Robert Stumpf and Ray Hesterberg. The group earned merit badges advanced in rank and enjoyed waterfront activities. Three 419 scouts joined a Kaskaskia River canoe trip across the Carlyle lake, an 18 mile trek. Troop 319 won four of ten events Friday night. A total of 205 scouts attended the week.

Retirement farmer and sexton John F. Besse dies at 87
John F. Besse, 87, of near Millstadt, died at 3 a.m. Monday at Castle Haven Convalescent Center where he had resided a week. A retired vegetable grower and long time sexton of St. James Cemetery, he was born April 12, 1880 in Millstadt. He married Louise Bertelsmann in 1908. she died in 1950. Surviving are a son Henry. three daughters Regina, Edna, Esther. a brother Jacob. a sister Josephine. 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. James Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

LeRoy Allen Fined in Circuit Court for Bad Checks
LeRoy Allen was fined 400 dollars on each of two deceptive practices charges in Circuit Court. He received three years probation on one charge. The offenses stem from a 1966 bad check for 100 dollars to Tom Lux and a 1965 check for 25 dollars to Philip Feldmeier.

Parcel post six days a week coming to Columbia Illinois
Postmaster R P Cash announced that Columbia Illinois parcel post deliveries will expand from five to six days weekly starting July 29 1967. The move follows a Johnson administration backed bill and Post Office Department funding for restoration of six day service affecting nearly 5000 cities nationwide.

Jill Smith honored guest with Nickels for Jill educational fund totaling about 60000 nickels. The convention opened with a joint session and memorial services at the John Deere center. Regional Director Donald Swanson spoke at a Friday banquet. guests included Mrs Jesse M Huggins and Lester F Miller. The Strassenfest in Columbia features music dances and food at Turner Park July 22 23 with multiple bands and dance venues and a coin and gun display.

Two Men Sentenced For Driving While Intoxicated
Louis H. Driver of Waterloo was sentenced to 70 days in Vandalia's state penal farm after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated. William Noble Gillahan of Paducah was given the same sentence after pleading guilty to an identical charge. Both convictions followed county use of a newly obtained intoximeter.

Trooper Mehrtens Receives Kerner Award in Springfield
Trooper Gene E. Mehrtens age 38 of Columbia received a state award from Gov. Otto Kerner at a Springfield dinner for breaking up a car theft ring. Four St. Louis men were indicted after Mehrtens traced stolen tires and wheels to a Waterloo clubhouse. Trooper Jimmy C. Bivens also honored from District 11 with dual lifesaving and outstanding work awards.
