Gulf Mobile and Ohio trains resumed service around 4 p m Wednesday after two days of clearance work. A 32 car derailment near Waterloo injured no one and tore up 600 feet of track with salt sugar aluminum ore and news print scattered along the line.
NFO advances marketing plans stressing processor recognition and structured flow of livestock from farmers to participating plants. The arrangements aim to shorten supply routes, lower procurement costs, reduce bruising, and boost NFO bargaining power while encouraging nonparticipants to join.
Secretary Powell announced an extension of the display deadline for 1965 motor vehicle license plates to midnight March 1. He cites easier enforcement cooperation, especially in Cook County, and to protect mail applicants before February 1 from arrest for noncompliance.
The council, led by Wilbert H. Kremmel in Mayor Pro-Tem role due to illness, voted to add a regular meeting per month. New fiscal year plan sets meetings for the 1st 2nd 3rd Mondays, planning commission on the 4th, and bids sought for a five lane traffic signal at S Main and Cherry.

Ninety farmers and families attended the 18th annual Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting at the Farm Bureau Hall in Waterloo. Officers elected included Chairman Robert Strong and Robert J Ehret as vice chairman, with Leo Kohler Jr as secretary treasurer and Curtis Henke and Lawrence Beckerle elected as members. Arlen L Hanson of the Soil Conservation Service spoke on Watersheds and P L 566 grants for flood and erosion control and local water supplies.
Senior students from Columbia High School are invited to tour the Illinois Division Highway Building at 9300 St. Clair Ave East St. Louis on February 25 from 3 30 to 5 00 p m Eight Bureau Chiefs will give three to four minute talks on work in their departments for the Illinois Division of Highways District 8 which covers eleven counties The event is sponsored by the Wives of the Illinois Association of Highways Engineers East St Louis Chapter in observance of Engineers Week February 21 27.
Mrs. Charles Swartz of 611 North Briegel serves as program chair man for the club. The speaker presented slides from a trip through Russia Finland Denmark Norway and Sweden at Le Chateau Clayton Missouri.
A Health Careers Conference will be held Saturday April 24 1965 from 1 to 3 15 p m in the Jubilee Room at Fischer's Restour ville Belleville. Co sponsored by Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Health Careers Council of Illinois the event covers 13 health careers with professional reps to answer questions. Attendance free for students from Belleville area high schools and others with no obligation to choose a career.
Candy Hoffmann named Basketball Queen 64 65 at Columbia High School dance. Escorts include Bill Todd Judy Stumpf Steve Volkert Mary Rouse and others from the varsity team. Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Turner Hall Tuesday February 23 from 2 to 7 pm with a 142 pint quota requiring signups and immediate donations.
The Illinois Highway Study Commission will hold the seventh public hearing in Belleville on Thursday February 18 in the Jubilee Room Fischer's Restaurant starting at 9 30 a m Conducted by Chairman O T Banton the session invites industries civic and professional organizations and individuals to suggest improvements to highway programs and comment on transportation issues The commission will present a final report and proposed legislation to the 1967 Legislature and seeks grass roots input for future highway plans Written presentations are encouraged for participants.
Julius L. Grob of St. Louis received a 50 year paid up receipt from Columbia Lodge A. F. & A. M. 474 at a Friday meeting. District Deputy Grand Master James Rains presented the honor. Grob, 71, born in Columbia, joined the lodge at 21 and has kept all receipts, signed by three secretaries, with plans to remain active.
Boy Scouts of Columbia Troop 319 is rechartered for one year from February 1965 to February 1966. Officers include Edgar Steppig institutional representative Earl Stahlheber chairman Arland Rey advancement Virgil Fassel treasurer Robert Stumpf recording secretary Robert Lepp Robert Dehn co chairman of paper drive Fred Weisenborn Robert Riebeling Lester Miller committee members Ray Hesterberg scout master Gene Henckler Sr Marvin Greailing assistant scout masters. A Board of Review and Committee meeting is scheduled at the Scout Hut on Tuesday evening February 23.
Four candidates seek seats on the Columbia Community Unit District No. 4 Board of Education. John Gummersheimer seeks re election along with George Riebeling Bill Wohlwend and Andrew Burgess. Three seats exist as terms of Olver Rey and Cash expire and neither seeks re election.
The Commission will study the informal nature of presentations and will record a tape. Wilbur Smith and Associates of New Haven, Connecticut, engineering consultants, will review the material. A firm representative will attend hearings to capture the public atmosphere and concerns about highway matters.
Chamber of Commerce members meet Wednesday with Herb Schueler presiding. They review Strassenfest July 23 24 plans, funding for Christmas lighting on Main St, a new brochure, and a drop mail box. Lions Club seeks support for a Nativity Scene designating committee action and festival coordination with Mayer Enterprises and Edelweiss Dancers involvement.
The Dupo Coin Club hosts its annual festival at the Dupo VFW Hall from 10 am to 6 pm Sunday. An auction of United States coins will begin at 1 pm.
