Monroe County Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Golden Jubilee
Fifty years after its August 10 1916 meeting at the Monroe County Courthouse in Waterloo the Monroe County Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company marked its golden jubilee. Charter officers led by Joseph W Richert and Edward Maeys helped organize the firm with agents paid per policy and later expanded to cover fire and wind risks. Riebeling discussed Viet Nam conditions, the U S role, and dangers from tropical and jungle terrain, tunnels, and snakes. He thanked the Gifts to Viet Nam Servicemen program and urged local names of service members for support after Jan 1.

Truck Driver Escapes Injury After Creek Landing Crash
A 1964 Ford pickup driven by George Gilliam missed a bridge turn on Bluff Road near Columbia Creek and landed on its top in the creek. The 9:45 PM Friday crash left Gilliam uninjured after brief hospital examination. the truck was totaled.

Deer Kill Report From Illinois Conservation Department
The Illinois Department of Conservation says hunters bagged 1 404 deer in the second half of the shotgun season. Six days produced 7 327 white tails, 285 fewer than 1965. Rain on December 9 and 10 in the southern state portion reduced the kill. Pope County saw about 500 fewer deer than last year. The heaviest deer was a 250 pound field dressed buck.

An Air Force airman, Carl Northup 19 of Mount Pleasant Iowa, died after an auto collision on Route 3 Evergreen Terrace on the Columbia by pass en route to his Iowa home. Northup died 15 minutes after arrival at St Elizabeths Hospital.

City council notes on water main, easements, and park project
The council approved a 12 inch water main encasement along Illinois State Highway 3 in Cahokia and recommended payment of 2875 to H J Frierdich & Sons Inc. for the contract. It discussed Monroe Street lot acquisitions, easement rights for a larger trunk line sewer, and an estimate for a 6 inch water line and 8 inch sewer line on Centreville Ave. An easement for Block 7 in Schneider's Addition was referred for approval. The park project led by Robert S. Link was not completed and unpaid claims were withheld. A petition by 44 Columbia Acres residents opposed commercial use of Lot 15, Block 2. A Library Board letter request for library-use-only clarification was discussed. Meeting adjourned at 11:56 p.m.

Woman hunts seven point deer along Mississippi near Merrimac
Mrs Esther Kuehner of Columbia stands beside Dale Mehrtens on a pickup bed after they each bagged a deer near Merrimac on November 19. Kuehner harvested a seven point white buck field dressed at 138 pounds. Mehrtens killed a doe at 75 pounds. The buck’s pink eyes and white hoofs are noted. Kuehner plans to have the head mounted.

Bussen Quarry Worker Drowns In Mississippi
Orville Thompson 34, a laborer for Bussen Quarry Co, drowned after falling from a barge near Jefferson Barracks Bridge into the Mississippi River on Tuesday December 20. He wore a life jacket but currents swept him under the barge. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Friday at Schmidt Funeral Home in Columbia with burial at Palmer Hill Cemetery. Reverend Wilbur L. Biasch of Zoar United Church of Christ will officiate. Survived by his mother in a nursing home and four brothers and three sisters across Missouri and Illinois.

The old St. Louis Hotel on Main Street owned by Ron Langhans is being wrecked by Don Steele. It opened as a saloon and hotel in 1887, built by Julius Breidecker and reportedly erected by his father in law, making it one of the community’s oldest structures.
