In a October 1858 voyage from Toly head to Kingstown, two estranged spouses Mr Francis Thirlby and Mrs Maria Thirlby unexpectedly reunite aboard the Concil iation. Aboard the stormy sea they confront past wrongs, forgive, and vow anew as the ship is saved by a rescue steam tug at Kingstown with their son Franky waiting ashore.
A rambly reminiscence recalls a boyhood view of Santa Claus shaped by a boastful Damphool figure, with comic asides about ginger beer, taffy candy, and Cottons of New Years Eve misadventures. The piece also includes a street encounter with a hungry loafer and a clergyman, ending with a wry anecdote about a flag raising remark and a marital weighing request.
