Alta California Sept 1 Aviator Bob Fowler en route from San Francisco to New York had a mislanding when a faulty engine and steering gear caused his biplane to collide with two trees. Both planes and two propellers were damaged. Fowler and a crew member were slightly injured and he will be delayed at least two days.
McNeal Monument Company of this city won the contract for the John L. Nolen monument amid bids from about twenty firms from the South. The project costs between 5500 and 4400. Mrs Shirley’s Cemetery Avenue home burned this morning due to a defective flue, with water supply issues hampering firefighting and leaving the house a near total loss and all contents uninsured.
Martin College opened its term in Pulaski Tennessee with a large enrollment and bright prospects. The auditorium was crowded as Rev T C Schmeller editor of the Midland Methodist delivered the opening address on Beuestion and Information, held the audience in close attention, with several bright suggestions highlighted.
JL Hutton, a leading local banker and farmer, showcases two prize jacks Great Jupiter and Saturn. They won first and second premiums at the Appalachian Exposition in Knoxville and at the Manly County Fair, with expectations to excel at the State Fair in Nashville.
At the State Fair opening day the races included a dramatic 2:10 trot where Hebi Dhvorter driven by Smith Thurman posted a quick second. Ethelego won after four heats against He Who. Big Heart owned by Caldwell Heathers of Mt Pleasant finished seven4 to the 2:20 pace. The main event matched Hohin Director against Ethelego.
The first and second districts of Maury county will hold a Sunday school convention at Lastine Hope near Carters Creek on Sunday September 1. Topics will cover issues for Sunday school workers and Charles H Yarbrough of Nashville will give an address alongside other leaders.
