The Tennessee Guard orders call for border service with the first and third regiments expected to depart soon. Local mobilization aims to reinforce security posture along the border as public authorities coordinate transport and deployment plans.
Tennessee county court approves purchase of Maury turnpikes and will open gates tomorrow. Looney and Rainey bond for repairs within fifteen days. Officials report pikes in good condition with minor exceptions. public protest and legal opinions discussed at special session.
Irish Taylor removed from Monday's confinement at the county work house reportedly escaped Tuesday night by sawing through a Yale lock with a steel saw. Two other prisoners slept nearby. guards heard dogs disturbance but found no escapee. Authorities, including Superintendent Akin, pursue Taylor with dogs and patrols.
Joe Stacy aged seventy five died at his residence near Park's Station after a heart attack Wednesday night. A Confederate veteran who supported the Bonnie Blue Flag he was a longtime Methodist church worker and respected citizen. Surviving children are Dan E Stacy Inez Jones Emma Rook and Miss McKay Stacy. Funeral at Bryant's Station Methodist Church conducted by Dr Pollen followed by interment at Bryant's Station cemetery Maury Undertaking Co. directors in charge.
Tom Cook received a state commission from Warden W D Houser appointing him deputy game warden of Maury County with Governor Rye’s signature. He vows to enforce laws protecting fish and game, succeeds W J Goad, and has strong county sportsman support.
The sixth district officers include Bighbyville with Petty as receiver and Thomas as clerk. Will Oldrom as judge. Southport has Gilbreath as server, Garrett as judge, and Mathews as clerk. Scott's Mill lists Hardy receiver Lusk judge Beckum serk. Enterprise names Stamps receiver Held judge Lindsey clerk. Seventh district names Pleasant with Williams judge Ingram clerk Erwin receiver Sandy Hook Syd Williams receiver Smith judged by Chapman.
Readiness is complete for the Jocal Phintias Lodge No 87 Knights of Pythias reception. District convention attendees from many lodges are expected Friday evening with extra degree work and strong representation likely making it one of the largest in years.
During State Fair week the northbound through train from Columbia at 6 40 a m will stop at all stations to Franklin plus a stop at Wedgewood State Fair. The southbound through train from Nashville at 9 05 p m will stop at all stations between Columbia and Franklin to discharge passengers.
Frank I. Mann of Gilman Illinois renowned Prairie Farmer co editor will address Columbia at the county corn show in October. He will discuss Taw phosphate and soil fertility and how to use phosphate rock on a fertile U S farm. The crowd may prompt renting the Opera House for his talk.
Mrs. Eva Young Campbell Cooper wife of Addison Cooper died Saturday at 5 30 PM at her Porter Pike home near Nashville. Born Columbia September 27 1854 she married Ad Meson Cooper January 27 1874. Survived by husband daughter Sallie Eugenie Cooper son Addison Cooper Jr grandson M D Cooper Jr sister in Columbia aunt of Mrs W P Ridley and J Collin James. Funeral and interment were at Zion church conducted by Dr W B Ricks with services at residence Sunday afternoon. Carriages arranged by Oakes Nichols.
Reverend W T Vesery D D has recovered from a serious illness and will preach at Rock Springs on Sunday if his condition continues to improve.
Columbia reports nearly complete returns show Governor Richard J. Manning defeating former Governor Cole Blease in the South Carolina Democratic primary runoff by an estimated 3000 to 7000 votes.
Republican gubernatorial candidate J W Overall toured Maury County meeting voters at the Hotel Bethel lobby with John Trotwood Moore and R B McLean. A late gathering of prominent Republicans and several Democrats greeted him as he declined state policy discussion for now. The party traveled with six autos and included supporters like Perry Taylor and J T Jeannette.
In magistrate court Squire Guest grants Morris Wolfe $30 against the Big Four railroad. Wolfe says a conductor told the train would stay an hour, leaving him to buy new tickets. Wolfe seeks reimbursement for his loss and costs.
Miss Carrie Smith of Columbia will give a reading for children at the Culleoka band concert next Bum day afternoon at 4 o clock. She is described as a talented reader and her appearance will be a treat for the people of that section.
