At Thursday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting Mayor Brownlow demanded stricter enforcement, exposing alleged police laxity and misapplied fines. He pressed for accountability after noting disciplinary lapses,Dockery’s unpaid fine, and questions about bonding and re-arrests. The board ratified new officer appointments but postponed broader policing reforms.
The third annual interscholastic contest under Vanderbilt University was held at Worthing Hall Nashville Friday night with a small audience. Judges Howell Pilcher and Rev. Ray awarded Edwin T. Noel of Howell School the medal while Hinton G Kittrell of Howard Institute Mt Pleasant received honorable mention. Twelve schools were represented. Mr Ray announced the judges’ decision as the declaimers performed well. The subject for Kittrell was The Middle Basin of Tennessee.
Knoxville May 4 The Tennessee Diocesan Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church discussed the divorce issue after the General Assembly failed to pass divorce legislation. Rev Dr Claiborne moved to bar ministers from marrying divorced persons. the motion received no record. A resolution to preserve Astwood Cemetery near Columbia was referred to a committee.
John Smith, a young white man who reached Columbia in a box car during a severe winter, has been in serious condition but shows improvement. He lost part of his right foot and toes on his left foot were saved, with faithful care from police at headquarters and officials. His Memphis home awaits his recovery so he can return home.
Lynnville Tennessee May 5 The Rose family, well known in Campbellaville, has suffered heavy affliction as three of their children have died within two weeks from a severe illness. Only two children remain, one of whom is not expected to recover as the disease progresses despite efforts. The affliction has struck indiscriminately.
South Bend Indiana May 4 A trained ape involved in a show was cited under the new anti cigarette law in Indiana. The case will be heard in a Justice's Court as part of enforcement actions.
The bond of Recorder Erwin for 10000 was accepted and Mr. Erwin qualified. The bond of City Marshal Webb for 500 was accepted and Mr. Webb qualified. The City Marshall reported 821020 collected in fees and costs during April. Recorder Erwin was granted thirty days leave and Porter Erwin appointed to discharge duties. Mr. Erwin was authorized to draw fees, prompting a humorous remark about going to California alone.
Decatur Alabama May 5 The jury found John Coltier colored guilty of murder in the first degree for the death of Miss Bell Bloodworth and fixed the punishment at death. Harvey Smith colored was convicted of the same crime and given the same sentence. Both trials were held under military guard to prevent mob violence and troops will remain until conclusion.
Sam Dostor Pov Cunningham John Gut and RK C Borne were arrested in Tullahoma taken to Manchester circuit court on a lynching case involving Rance Gwynoe taken from city lockup March 8 and hanged behind the prison. Authorities anticipate bond for their appearance at the next term.
Carrie Nation, jailed in Wichita, plans to leave Kansas after serving her sentence and settle in Oklahoma. She allegedly conveyed Topeka property to private parties for 7000 and seeks a prostitution clause in Oklahoma’s constitution upon statehood. Nation appeals a district court decision. she was fined 150 and given 30 days. The sold property was rejected as a gift by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union at last October's state convention.
Friday evening a blaze consumed Prof. T. M. Hogan’s barn near Bighyville. Hogan, who left minutes before, could not explain the fire’s origin. His horse named Bugay, forty barrels of car, and some bay were lost. Loss estimated around $600 with no insurance. The San Francisco Board of Education has taken firm stands against admitting Chinese and Japanese pupils to white schools.

H P Figoors and J A Dinning for plaintiffs and H P Hatcher, C P Hatcher, and W B Gordon for defendants.
Under Summertown Lodge No 276 and Urestwew Lodge No 476 Odd Fellows marked the Stith anniversary with outdoor plans moved indoors due to weather. A late passenger train brought visitors who joined a two hour talk by Past Grand Master John M Nolen and a plentiful dinner followed by evening exercises at the Methodist church in Summertown.
The graduates dating back to 1808 formed a Siamese association, with members including Mise Addie Simms and Laese Baller. Committees on programming planned actions for an event on June 2, aiming to coordinate activities and sighted tasks.
Police rounded up a group Monday morning for Judge Ervein's inspection. Most offenders faced minor charges, but Blackbottom saloon keeper and Otey Davis, whose grocery adjoins the Site saloon, faced serious accusations. A sliding panel connected the two houses, enabling Sunday thirst to pass from the grocery to the saloon, with officers finding many empty bottles when they entered.
The case of Mr Harrison of Huntsville Alabama against the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was continued to the next term. The incident involved Harrison being removed from a train by Policeman J D Hooven at the request of conductor Henry Allen. Witness logistics caused repeated delays as conductor Allen and former agent Smith were unavailable. W L Hooten testified on the death of his brother.
