Rutgers entomologist Professor B Smith reports a new brood of seventeen year locusts forming in forests and orchards across New Jersey New York Pennsylvania and adjacent regions. The insects measure from one to one and a half inches with glassy wings orange eyes and a dark body. The brood last appeared in 1885 and will last about a month before cicadas vanish. The life cycle spans seventeen years underground with a short month above ground to lay eggs. The brood will cover New Jersey southern New York northern Pennsylvania and areas west toward the Mississippi, with southward reach.
