Inspectors detail a decayed 1907 Maury County Asylum with vermin, inadequate care and unsanitary inmates. They report licentious behavior, insufficient medical facilities, and a diet of corn bread and bacon, with separate quarters for whites and blacks and rudimentary confinement. The Tennessee Supreme Court upholds the state antitrust statute against the Standard Oil Company and Holt, a blow to combines. Attorney General Cates plans immediate action to oust offending corporations, starting with Standard Oil. The case hinges on fines for officers and agents, with potential imprisonment and a maximum $5,000 fine. Holt faced possible imprisonment but escaped.
Lynnville Tenn February 22 temperance supporters celebrate Columbia passage of a bill abolishing saloons citing removal of evil and suppression of the jug trade to Lynnville and Decatur Alabama. Lynnville hopes liquor shipments diminish statewide and favors ending liquor business in the state.
A Altoona man who owned a fine forty horsepower limousine experiences financial distress as his affairs are settled. The car disappears but later reappears in the creditor’s sight in the bankrupt man’s garage. The creditor confronts him, questioning how a bankrupt can still own the automobile.
A special Columbia city meeting reviewed the Nashville and Columbia Interurban Railway extension. President A H Mayberry pledged $1000 as good faith while detailing funds, contracts, and a staggered start to grading and construction within eighteen months to connect Nashville to Mt Pleasant.
Mrs Morence E Atwood of 18 Crilly Place Chicago writes that three months using Cuticura Soap Ointment and Pills cured a three year eczema. She praises the remedies and states she is now well, with witness L Berger.
Fragmented ad copy touts a pamphlet on women’s distress and a treatment set including Cutler Ointment and Cutioura products. It claims focal and constitutional relief, purifying effects, and beautifying healing for hair hands and skin, with nonspecific references to aes and ulcerative conditions.
