Monument Unveiled For Jefferson Davis In Richmond

Richmond June 3 under a perfect sky the United Confederate Veterans unveiled a monument to Jefferson Davis as part of the reunion. Veterans, bands, and crowds marched along Monument Avenue while Gen Stephen D Lee warned against politics. William J Bryan received an ovation but was kept from the stand amid calls for silence. The ceremony concluded with continued cheers and a grand parade honoring Davis and the South.

The commencement at the Columbia Military Academy featured Rev. Dr. Lin Cage of Nashville delivering a sermon on Watch ye stand fast in the faith and Quit ye like men. Cadet drills, a sham battle, and the first annual debate between Jackson and Lee Literary Societies followed, drawing large crowds from within fifty miles.

Teachers Elected by Columbia Board of Education

The Columbia Board of Education elected teachers for the next session in a harmonious meeting. Reelected were Prof. Bostick and Prof. Kelley for white and colored schools, with many appointments including Miss Mary Carpenter as High School principal and W. P. Morton as High School assistant principal. New principals include W. B. Davidson at Grammar School and J. W. Journey at Primary School with several new teachers. substitutes postponed. Under a past resolution, salaries of old teachers were valued at $2.50 per month.

Duck River Navigability Sought for Centreville Area

Centreville residents press for a government survey to evaluate making Duck River navigable from Centreville to the mouth. Congress has authorized the survey, with Rep Padgett urging quick action. English playwright Granville Barker to head new New York theatre

Citizens Telephone Company Reorganized To Raise Capital

A large stockholders meeting at the Opera House approved reorganizing the Citizens Telephone Company with an authorized capital of 75 000 dollars. Dr O J Porter led plans to swap old stock for new shares and to extend modern exchanges across the county to improve service and fund a dividend target.
