State assessment is far too high in Maury County
Janes M. Ingram a Maury County farmer near Williamsport would sell his farm to the state at the new state valuation and even discount the assessment by thousands. He bought the place for 23035 with old and new assessments rising to 12535, a $19000 gap from his purchase price, contending the old assessment applied to the former owner. County Tax Assessor Webb Williams is correcting numerous cases as directed by the state board of equalization to reflect actual cash value.

Constitutional wheel tax attacked in criminal court
The trial before Judge Whitthorne centered on the constitutionality of Maury County wheel tax. Colonel Thomas Peebles, defending W. P. Erwin, argued the 1919 act imposes double taxation by taxing property and privilege for the same vehicles and exceeds its caption. County Attorney Shelton contends the law is constitutional, applying to road users and wearers of highway services. The case draws broad local interest and a decision is expected after several days.
