The Maury County Democratic Executive Committee voted 83 to 4 to hold a county officers primary under a 1901 act. Rules require voters to support nominees, with April 6 set as the primary date and a November convention to pick delegates for judicial and gubernatorial nominations.
The Maury County Democratic Executive Committee calls a Democratic primary to nominate County Judge County Court Clerk Circuit Court Clerk Sheriff Trustee and Register. Members pledge to support the nominees and abide by the primary rules and conditions before any candidacy and to actively back the chosen candidates.
Mr. Jim Forgey and Cliff Timmons narrowly escaped as fire gutted Forgey’s store last Monday night. Fire destroyed building and stock insured for 2000 with A. O. Nicholson Co. and 1000 with J. J. Glam. ownership by KR. Shaw. Origin of blaze unknown.
William Stephenson a colored man was bound over after a preliminary hearing before Geo W Hayes on the charge of murder in the first degree in Enterprise for the December 2 killing of Pha raoh Brewer a white man. Testimony by several witnesses led to binding over to the next Circuit Court term. John Stephenson brother of William is jailed on the same charge and waived examination after surrender at Mt Pleasant.
In Knoxville Tennessee January officials of the Great Northern Express identify the jailed man known as Charlie Johnson as the real Logan who robbed the Express. D Eliott of St Paul Minnesota general manager confirms the confirmation and says the Arizona arrestee claiming to be Logan is not genuine.
In a Warren County case Judge M D Smallman ruled the four mile law bars sheriffs from selling intoxicating liquors under execution. The ruling holds contraband liquor cannot be sold or conveyed by judicial process even if the judgment debtor could not sell it himself. The Recorder’s judgment was affirmed and the defendant appealed to the Supreme Court.
Rome Georgia early morning crash on Southern Railway involved Mme Lillian Nordica, her accompanist Romayne Simmons, and others. Nordica sustained injuries while her car detached from the wrecked passenger train. engineer Travey of Atlanta was killed and several crew members hurt. Nordica had performed in Atlanta and was bound for Nashville for a Monday engagement. her car and two Pullmans were moved back to Rome and will travel on the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis line.
Special to the Herald reports Mme Nordica has arrived in Nashville on January 13 and will sing tonight. Her injuries are described as very slight.
Morgan Fita Patrick, chairman of the State Democratic executive committee, issues a call to the sixteen members to convene at Tulane Hotel Nashville on February 8 1902 at 10 am. The aim is to set time and place for a state convention to nominate candidates for governor railroad commissioner Supreme Court judges and Court of Appeals judges and to handle other business as it arises. It is widely expected two conventions will be held for different judicial and executive nominations.
The body of San Jackson was found in Richland Creek near Pulaski after relatives searched the water. A facial contusion suggests death by foul play. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances.

Indictments reportedly returned against Harry Bonner and W D Hughes for selling liquor without license.
Nashville Tenn Jan 13 a stupendous cost coal combine nears completion per the Financial Age with incorporators names withheld It will control the largest coal acreage under one head totaling over 1 250 000 acres across Kentucky Tennessee and Alabama The initial assets are placed at 875 000 000 with potential growth including railroad properties later added
The five or six year old daughter of Eng. W. J. Kinzer of Rawdust suffered severe burns Monday when her clothing ignited while her mother milked. Most garments were burned away, one side of her body scorched, hair burned, and she remains in critical condition as rescuers smothered the flames.
W G Post state attorney at Newman Georgia questioned J H Pearson for impersonating an Atlanta deputy sheriff and aiding in the release of Braet Crowder. Depositions from Sheriff Hight, deputies Church and Lochridge, and clerk Breast were taken. Post intends to prosecute Pearson.
The Democratic Judicial Committee for the circuit will convene on Saturday to decide the time and manner of nominating candidates for Circuit Judge and Attorney General. The report notes the season’s cotton crop as a small yield, with under 4,000 bales produced.
In a baseball flavored meeting the Board of Mayor and Aldermen passed a measure reducing saloon licenses from 20 to 100 dollars per year on the second and third readings. Aldermen White and Craft opposed on first try. White shifted stance to support later. Mayor Yoost signed the ordinance, taking effect after passage, with refunds on first quarter taxable under dispute by Judge Erwin.
The state prison commission filed the annual report of farm operations for the year ending December 1 1901 showing a net profit of 118.79 and farm on hand values of 14703.41. Cash value of farm products on hand is 29507.70. The August overflow damaging river bottoms caused about 6000 in losses with 250 acres of corn 40 acres of pea hay and 20 acres of vegetables totally destroyed.
In Maury county court they met Monday morning to elect four workhouse superintendents and guards for the ensuing term. The peace election results gave A. J. Gollan as guard.
