Maury County Republicans gather amid chatter of mule prices and cattle sales while state party leaders map a February 18 meeting at the Tulane Hotel Nashville to set dates for the State Convention and discuss endorsements for governor and national committeeman.
The Neapolis community mourns as Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sowell, a married couple long regarded as leading citizens, die within about an hour of each other after both fall ill with pneumonia. The couple’s funeral was held at the Neapolis Methodist Church, with interment in Neapolis Cemetery, and neighbors note their kindness and good deeds.
George W. Nichols of Columbia announces his candidacy for Tax Assessor of Maury County in the Democratic primary on April 6. A lifelong local businessman with ties to Carter's Creek and Columbia, Nichols is described as active, courteous, and connected to farmers, having paid high prices to potato raisers and pledged to perform duties well if elected.
In session today Judge Gordon presides over a seven case docket with four set for trial this term. The light session focuses on expedited hearings and swift disposition of pending matters.
Mrs Ellen Schwarta thirty and her infant son Francis eleven months were found dead at 49 Carpenter Street Chicago. Authorities believe starvation and exposure caused the deaths after the woman was deserted by her husband weeks earlier and had relied on charity.
In Robertson Fork season findings of phosphate on several farms are analyzed as excellent grade and plentiful. A farm near the community shows a hard rock-like substance burning coal qualities. Some of the phosphate is underground while large amounts lie exposed, easily broken and usable as fuel. an analysis is planned.
A Herald representative records a citizen questioning weather prognostication by the ground hog and comparing it to a bat. The citizen cites prior bat sightings in February 1906 and a severe winter 1904-05 as context for which omen deserves belief.
Monday saw a heavy crowd at the trustee Thomas and Deputy Trustee Par year as residents paid taxes. Most payments were small with only a few large settlements. over 800 receipts were issued but total receipts barely exceeded $2,000. In Ames lines stretched to the hall and officials forecast a March rush to reach last February's record of over $65,000.
George Hogue, a respected Black resident of Blue Spring, lost his hut home to a Tuesday fire and saved nothing from the blaze.
In Blountville Sullivan county Democrats reorganized with David Barger elected chairman. They endorsed former Governor Cox for state senator and Judge S. I. Chesnut for flaternal Representative. The meeting supported Cox and Worley teams jointly, denying imminent fights. Prohibition was adopted as a policy.
In Frankfort Kentucky reports say one or two Democratic lawmakers may lose their seats after contests filed against them. Contests may lead to Republican seating as committees have reached conclusions and are prepared to report within a day or two.

Anti Taft leaders claim 600 votes oppose Secretary Taft in the Republican national convention. They name Knox Cannon Hughes La Follette as holding firm delegates and say Taft cannot secure the nomination if these claims hold. Consensus may force concentration on one opposition candidate for a compromise.
Reports from the Portuguese frontier claim Premier Franco is fleeing toward Spain amid disorder in Lisbon. Telegraph dispatches describe heavy firing near the western Lisbon barracks as unrest erupts, though confirmation is not yet received.
New Orleans January 30 official statement from Adjt. Gen. William E B Mickle of the Confederate veterans says there will be no joint reunion with G A R veterans at the Confederate reunion in June at Birmingham Alabama. The policy bans inviting non Confederates to reunions under the veterans constitution.
Paul Nelley, motorman on a Ninth avenue car, jailed for manslaughter in the second degree after a 1905 wreck that killed four teens. He received a sentence of not less than a year six months and not more than two years. Nelley disappeared after the crash and reappeared in San Francisco last July. Another motorman, Thomas McDermott, convicted of manslaughter in the second degree for a Bronx death in July, was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary.
Nashville Feb 4 Judge Jos D Higgins of Fayetteville has applied for the open supreme judgeship. A Sumner county delegation met with the Governor in support of Judge B D Bell. Judge Floyd Hstill’s candidacy is being vigorously backed by his supporters.
In Shelbyville Tennessee on February 3 the Republican convention opened with Ernest Coldwell leading the Brownlow faction. T. O. Tune won the chair after a fierce battle, while W. H. Crowell backed the Hyans side and L. T. Heager was elected secretary. Taft endorsed, Riley Burrow named as district delegate to the national convention. State convention delegates will stay with Coldwell supporters, though Evann for VP and Tilman for governor were endorsed by the Hyans faction after a tough contest.
