The highest tribunal upholds magistrate court decisions in the Holt case, ruling in favor of the defendants. The opinion clarifies legal standards and supports lower court judgments sustaining the defendants' positions.
The Tennessee Supreme Court today hurried opinions and adjourned until January 8. It affirmed lower court judgments in three Maury county cases involving magistrates and the right to accept laws and emoluments beyond regular pay. Several other Maury equity matters, a land condemnation petition, and will construction cases were decided or dismissed, marking a complete victory for the defendants and filings for certiorari being mooted.
The Chicago Law and Order League instructed every sworn policeman from Chief Shippey to patrolmen to close Sunday saloons, citing Judge Heap's Chamales decision to support Sunday liquor prohibition and warning of civil service penalties for not enforcing the law. Arthur Page Farwell read the letter to a large, enthusiastic afternoon gathering.
Mrs Frank Woody formerly of gan now of Union City was seriously injured by a fall last week. She stood on a chair to hang a curtain and broke one arm and one leg. The leg was amputated above the knee on Friday. Mrs Woody was a delegate to the W C T U convention in Columbia and a guest of Mr and Mrs B A Satterfield. She is highly regarded in Union City and Santa Fe where she has many relatives.
Fire destroyed John Crouse s store near Darks Mill with the entire stock. Fire discovered in the sand is thought to have started from a spark from a passing train. Stock was unusually large for the season with Christmas goods received Friday. No insurance. A small dwelling belonging to R.4 Wilkes at Cullooka was also destroyed in the same blaze Friday night. Loss estimated around 1000 dollars with 508 dollars insurance.
Special to The Herald Nashville Tenn December 24 Miss Ewsle Scales daughter of J H C Scales a prominent citizen and retired merchant committed death by own action last night by taking rough on rate. Miss Scales a handsome young woman of thirty had been in poor health for some time and it is supposed her mind had become impaired by reason of that fact.
Congressman Padgett returns home for Christmas with family says no immediate financial relief likely and Republican majority uncertain. He notes Roosevelt bond issues quiet talk of Democrat bond issuance and sees Democratic victory prospects improving, predicting Bryan as nominee by acclamation and a favorable election outlook. Republicans privately uneasy but not surprised at a Democratic win.
The Denver Convention League forwarded $26,000 from its $100,000 pledge to the Democratic National Committee to Chairman Thomas Taggart at French Lick. The rest will be paid in equal installments on January 22, February 22 and March.
A temporary plant owned by the Pree Tolite Company in Indianapolis exploded. Elmer Jensup and John Vangor der were fatally hurt while H Shin ner suffered serious injuries. Compounding details are limited.
In Kershaw South Carolina early Sunday morning Dee 28 old tragedy followed a fist fight between Welsh and Mobley. Welsh and Clyburn acted as peacemakers and were killed as Mobley shot Welsh then fell to the ground. Mobley was fatally wounded after four shots from Welshs pistol. All three were leading citizens of the town.
About three hundred Maury County residents bought tickets for Nashville at the Columbia depot Saturday and returned that night. The trip’s notable aspect was many travelers carrying suit cases and gripe during their day visit. Some locals joked merchants stocked every merchandise except those cases and gripe, hinting they were bringing back missing holiday stock. The remark suggests a big Christmas season ahead.
In London a gathering of about 760 veterans marked the golden jubilee of the Indian mutiny. Special to The Herald Nashville Tenn December 34 A fire shortly after midnight destroyed the grocery store of T T Ransom and the furniture warehouse of Wilmot and Green. Losses estimated at 1500 dollars on stock in Ransom building and 1500 on furniture in Wilmot and Green. insurance 600 and 700 respectively. The Wilmot and Green building owned by George W Jackson valued at 2000 dollars, only partly insured.
W J Russell is named guardian for Mine Locie Thomas. HM Harlan qualifies as guardian for Gabe Walter Annie Lee and Ethel Greenfield. J C Lawrence qualified as guardian for 4 Lawrence Cook.
The Ministers' Association met promptly this morning in the Study of the First Methodist church. W. C. Stroud T. A. Wharton and A. E. Clement attended. Next Monday's program includes a Book Review by Dr. A. G. Dinwiddie and a sermon outline by Rev. T. H. Porter.
Parke proprietor of the Palson Meat Market started butchering hogs Friday. He plans to butcher and pack about one thousand hogs this year. For years past Parke has baconed pork for the Southern market.
