William J. Bryan visited Washington and was greeted with applause in the House. Democrats and Republicans surrounded him, as he prepared to engage with leaders in both chambers to influence the national campaign next summer.
The will of Tyree Noles of Hampshire is probated in County Court. He leaves 112 acres to his son Jesse with a life estate for his wife and a future home for his daughter until marriage. Jesse Noles qualifies as executor of the estate.
An unusually large Columbia lodge of Masons met at the Masonic Hall on Friday night. Prof J C Hardy of the Columbia Military Academy was the candidate, drawing boyish amusement as fathers were urged to even the score for past offenses. When Hardy presumes to “lay it on,” he will know exactly how the boys feel.
William Jennings Bryan, in the Senate wing of the capitol, hinted his modesty may keep him from attending the next national Democratic convention, a remark interpreted by leaders as a sign of his certainty of renomination next year.
Democratic Senators met after adjournment and elected C A Culberson of Texas as Chairman of the Democratic Caucus. McCreary of Kentucky was chosen Vice Chairman and Owen of Oklahoma was named Secretary. A steering committee was authorized to arrange appointments on Senate committees and guide the minority's legislative course.
A White House meeting tonight included President and Senators Aldrich of Rhode Island and Crane of Massachusetts to discuss proposals to ease currency stringency. Aldrich said no definite decision had been reached.
Birmingham December 3 Julius W Davidson head of the anti administration wing of the Alabama Republican party says he will soon call a meeting of the State Committee and a State Convention This serves notice to J O Thompson officeholders and the Roosevelt wing that the Davidson faction will not back Roosevelt The National Committee will thus have two sets of Alabama delegates to select from.
In Washington a jury delivered a not guilty verdict for Mrs. Annie M. Bradley, charged with the murder of former Senator Arthur M. Brown. The packed courtroom applauded as the trial, followed for three weeks, concluded with nine for acquittal and three for manslaughter before a lone juror changed position.
Washington begins new session as all senators attend and most representatives present. Tennessee members highlight treasury recommendations aiding Knoxville and Chattanooga projects. Poultry show officials elected. next year’s event planned for December with Judge Marshall expected to judge.
The congregation of the First Baptist church accepts Rev T H Athey of Lynchburg Virginia as pastor. He will move his family here January 1 and begin his duties after delivering a sermon to the congregation a few weeks ago.
Tom Marks was arraigned in City Court this morning charged with whipping his wife and assessed a fine plus costs totaling $8.75. Oscar Brown, described as white, was arrested Monday by Merrcy Peyton and J Morgan for drunkenness and given lodging at the county jail. his case remained undecided at the morning session.
President Roosevelt sent to the Senate the nomination of John W. Jackson to be postmaster at Columbia. If confirmed he will serve a four year term, after holding the office by recess appointment since last June.
A Columbia merchant overheard a Maury County man complain of banks not paying out deposits. The merchant, holding a returned check marked No funds on deposit, saw no injustice in banks keeping money, despite public uproar and calls to abolish banks.
During a sermon at Shelton's Chapel near Clear Springs, a stove caused a ceiling fire that sparked brief panic. The blaze was quickly controlled with little damage and services resumed after a short interruption. Elder J. C. Shelton preached at the time.
The Maury County Society of Dental Surgeons met Tuesday evening at Dr. Merrill’s office. Dr. Merrill presented a paper on plate work, with discussion by all attendees. The next meeting is set with Dr. J McQayock on the first Tuesday night in January.
Governor Patterson welcomes about one hundred farmers and ex-legislators to the Middle Tennessee Farmers Institute in Nashville. Meadors of Giles replies, White presides, Patterson urges farming interests, cooperation, and fair prices, with talks on roads and farm welfare by Calhoun and Bryson.
Pittsburg Pa dec 3 thirty bodies were recovered in the Nanmle coal mine in Fayette City. Rescue parties and special police controlled the crowd as bodies were brought to the surface and taken to a nearby building where Coroner Hagan received the victims. Some estimate total deaths between forty and fifty.
A large delegation of county farmers travelled to Nashville to attend the Middle Tennessee Farmer's Institute at the capitol. About a dozen from Dark's Mill, led by President D. N. Moroney, joined others from the county as the institute meets for three days.
Joliet Dec 4. Chairman Jamon MM Yorris of the Populist National Committee issued a call for a Populist National Convention to meet in St Louis on April 1908 to nominate candidates for President and Vice President. Delegates: two per congressional district and four at large per state and territory with one at large for each town or vote majority fraction cast for the People's party in 1904.
The trial opens with Will Harris charged with murder. Harris, a deputy sheriff from a prominent local family, is accused of shooting Whit Kitchen, mine foreman, on a Mt Pleasant train platform after stopping at the depot. Eyewitness accounts vary while Kitchen had a violent past and threats are noted.
The U S Supreme Court set January 6 for hearing Franklin County Tenn case on whether tenants on land owned by the University of the South at Sewanee are taxed under Tennessee law. The ruling would affect nearly all Sewanee residents and local taxation.
The Columbia business scene reports solid gains despite currency shortages. Clearing house certificates and checks have filled the gap, with overall November activity higher than last year. Leading merchants confirm stronger sales, while collections run slightly below expectations yet remain optimistic given circumstances.
F P Frepeh accused of complicity in the murder of James B Marcus at Jackson years ago was acquitted after a Hateville trial that lasted several days. The jury found him not guilty on the murder charge and the case ended without a conviction.
