A gasoline explosion in a Meck Bottom barber shop sparked a full town fire in Mt Pleasant. Winds drove flames toward the main business area as dynamite was used to blow up several structures. Total loss estimated at 25 000 with little or no insurance.
At Hatford Connecticut on August 21 baby Julius Fein was born at seven in the morning weighing fourteen pounds. The birth certificate proclaims him the seventh son of a seventh son born under a caul amid Mars and Jupiter with the sinking moon seven days old. His mother is forty one, multiplying to twice seven.
In Chicago on August 22 details emerge that the union's trusted Secretary Treasurer allegedly diverted funds. Through duplicate books and juggling accounts, over the course of a year the official is said to have gained possession of all union funds, totaling just over $20,000. A special meeting has been convened to decide on action.
Frank Creight and George Calloway, both Black men, were bound over to county court without bond after being held on charges related to the killing of Jim Debine on the Bear Creek pike. The men faced demanding examinations that day.
A large gathering of Hay Long College graduates met at Mt. Pleasant Tennessee for an annual planning session led by Mrs Sim Wall and Mrs Thorne. Officers named include President Mrs Wm Thorne Vice President Miss Edna Long Secretary Miss Nellie Weaver Treasurer Mrs Tom Napier. An alumni society to be called Hay Long Alumni Society was formed with plans for annual readings and a banquet.
Aug 23 Little Rock Rev W T Amis minister of Hot Springs Baptist church and editor of the Citizens Bulletin backed by Arkansas political machine urged to seek the Democratic nomination. Amis aided passage of the race track measure that effectively closed horse racing in Arkansas in the last legislature session.
In response to money market strain New York City increased the rate on sale bonds from 4 to 4.25 percent. The mayor summoned department heads to cut expenditures to the lowest sustainable level while the Trust Fund Commission approved the action affecting corporate stock and assessment bonds, a first in twenty years to exceed 4 percent.
A bill of injunction filed in Lincoln county chancery court accuses Elk Mining Company of improper stock issuance. Complainants include M. J. Franklin and others of Kelso. defendants include Elk Mining and Seane Rees of Memphis. Judge Higgins granted the injunction. The company holds 6,000 acres of phosphate land and lists several Winchester, Tennessee associates.
Mrs. Margaret Howell Jefferson Davis Hayes, daughter of the Confederate president, protested to Gen. William J. Palmer after a Pennsylvania cavalryman displayed a 300,000 Lincoln assassination reward at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. Palmer ordered the proclamation removed. Mrs. Hayes recalled her father teaching that justice comes through fair fighting, not murder, and lamented Lincoln’s passing and his successor.
Treasury officials puzzled by a $1 mail contribution from Fremont, California, accompanied by an unsigned note stating payment for watermelons. The government does not sell watermelons and cannot apply the funds. One Secret Service linked explanation suggests a conscience-stricken man repenting for stolen watermelons tries to “make things right” with the Treasury.
The Fayetteville stockyards handled about 11 000 head of sheep worth over 50 000 dollars this season and an estimated 20 000 head have been shipped into the country. Farmers are shifting to sheep raising encouraged by current laws. A sheep-killing dog and a grand jury charge are seen as improvements under Judge Higgins.
State Agriculture Commissioner Wilkinson predicts 15 cent cotton prices this fall, based on other prices and current expectations, with Alabama’s crop at about 70 percent good and no notable improvement in outlook. Edward W. Carmack lectured at Rabery B. Jones High School in Lynnville for the monument fund, praised by attendees.

Mrs. Marence Fe. Atnoul of 18 Crilly Place Chicago reports three years of severe eczema improved after using Cuticura Soap Ointment and Pills for three months. She says doctors in Chicago failed, but now is perfectly well and highly recommends the remedies. Witness I. Berger. October 2, 1905.

It touts Cuticura Soap and Ointment as purifying beautifying skin, scalp, hair and hands aids, claiming strong medicinal benefits for inflammatory ulcers and restoring health to weakened, exhausted women.
