Lynnville Tennessee August 18 a singular accident at Bluff Springs Distillery. Jerry Gordon a colored worker was sent to Pulaski with whiskey. He halted near Buford slept and his upper body clothes burned when a barrel exploded throwing him from the wagon. Team ran off leaving wreckage. Theories cite barrel with gunpowder or concealed dynamite for fishing. Gordon is critical and cannot explain the incident.
Deputy Sheriff TOS White of Waynesboro engages five Tennessee penitentiary escapees armed with 44 caliber pistols at a Cypress Creek cabin. White, pursuing from Waynesboro, fires at close range as the convicts return fire. Two gunmen, Gus Hyatt and John Doe, stand briefly before fleeing. others identified by authorities from prison photos.

Privileges depend on behavior, with upper grades allowed limited letter writing and visiting, a plain suit, middle grade limited liberties, and the lowest grade stripped of privileges, forced to wear stripes and march in lock step.
Lincoln Nebraska August 14 W J Bryan replies to a New Orleans Times Democrat editor. He states he shall not be a candidate for the presidency in the next campaign and has no plan for renomination. He seeks a loyal nominee who stands by the people against wealth and supports the 1896 and 1900 platforms.
