Democrats Split Over Tariff Bill Pressure from Republicans
Washington reports show Republicans accusing Democrats of discriminating against farmers in tariff schedules. Democrats seek concessions from progressives but face demands for house backing. Negotiations with Simmons and Underwood fail, risking defeat of the measure as farm support wavering and voter anger grows. President Wilson remains firm that the bill be enacted as drafted.

Break Wheat Land At Once For Best Yields
A letter from T. B. Parker in The Progressive Farmer argues for immediate breaking and subduing of land intended for wheat. He cites a 1911 Kansas experiment showing far higher yields when land was broken by mid July and cultivated every three weeks, versus breaking later. Parker notes differences if the field has two crops of peas or corn.
