Ex senator scathingly arraigns Patterson administration for deeds of omission and commission. Declaration for statewide prohibition meets with enthusiastic approval. Patterson makes adroit response and is applauded by followers.
The Zion murder case narrows as Will Armstrong, a Black man, was arrested Tuesday night by Deputy Good at Stephenson Bros. store and jailed after refusing to discuss the case. Witnesses had tied Armstrong to a gun sale and possession the day after the Webster murder, but Armstrong denied involvement and claimed no gun ownership or direct knowledge of the crime.
In Calleoka Tennessee on April 22 the fruit crop is reported as not full but excellent in quality. Officials see no further frost damage and expect satisfactory yields from Calleoka and surrounding districts.
In Chattanooga on April 16 a crowd of about five thousand heard Senator Carmack and Governor Patterson open their joint gubernatorial debate. Carmack showed poise and strong factual argument, while Patterson spoke with confidence though less connected, drawing enthusiasm from supporters and several onstage Republicans. The event featured divided crowds and lively partisan energy, with Carmack appearing to lead in perceived impact.
Local traders report strong demand for cattle and sheep with several large deals. Joe Hagey bought 225 sheep and lambs and 14 head of cattle from T. J. Petty for 1400 dollars. Hagey sold lambs and ewes to Gallatin buyers for shipment this week totaling about 1350 dollars. He also arranged May delivery for 600 lambs at around 3000 dollars. Allen Bros. purchased from J. Lem Thorne for May delivery a load of lambs at good prices.
The Nashville and Huntsville railroad survey will start at Huntsville on April 21. Rights of way are secured as far as two to three miles from the Tennessee line. Commuters have traveled to complete this route.
The adjourned Quarterly Court discussed prosecuting the Columbia Godwin Santa Turnpike Co and named G J Hughes to aid the County Attorney. The Equalization Board was formed with members from all county sections and a central appointee. road work pay set at 2.50 per day. Neapolis voting precinct restored. Poor House reports show 44 inmates and $356.55 maintenance. Notaries public elected. jurors named for May term court. St Peters parish held a meeting. Rev W B Capers offered resignation as rector, connected with Columbia Institute. Vestry to meet Thursday to elect officers.
Mt Pleasant Tenn April 18 miners and country people fill the town on pay day. Mining work advances with strong activity but phosphate sales contracts for 190% season not closing quickly as buyers seek lower prices while sellers hold firm. High grade rock mines remain in strong hands, suggesting prices will hold while stockpiles dwindle.
Home grown strawberries made their first appearance in Culleoka Easter marketplace. A number of farmers and truck growers gathered several quarts and brought them to Culleoka Saturday evening. they were on the tables Sunday at dinner.
The Mailing List of Maury county contains 35 routes and 12 post offices with 5,000 names. Compiled by Harris Puryear and A. P. Thomas, the book targets heads of families and young men who are taxpayers and voters. Priced at $10, it is touted as essential for business men and promises more sales from the compiler.
The fifth reunion of the Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Nashville Orient of Tennessee is in session in Nashville. Prominent Masons from across the state attend as the sixth seventh and eighth degrees are conferred.
In Johnson City Tennessee April 21 192? a public debate drew about 2500 to the Hippodrome rink with Carmack and Patterson facing off. Carmack drew the livelier reception among Democrats while Republicans backed the governor. The discussion centered on the Memphis ripper bill with the governor defending the law and praising his appointed commission members. The crowd was smaller than at Bristol or Knoxville and the event closed without notable sparks. Continued on second page.
The coroner a jury met at Zion to probe the murder of Albert Webster colored. They adjourned to allow more time for investigation and found the body dragged about three quarters of a mile after death. Evidence included shirt fragments and hair at drag points. stock kept without food or water during absence.
A motorman in Madrid saved King Alfonso and two princes when their car plowed into a streetcar yesterday. The king expressed deep thanks and awarded 50 pesetas, about $10, as a token of appreciation.
A husband named W. J. Riggins obtained a writ of replevin through H. H. Fariss to recover his wife Ada Templeton from her parents near Columbia. After bond of 20 dollars, deputy Good accompanied them to the Templetons’ home where the wife initially resisted but returned home with Riggins on Wednesday.
Governor Patterson approved appointments at Nashville on April 22 naming J. G. Hardy and J. Edgerton of Columbia Military Academy as colonels. J. Martin received major, with R. G. Com and E. J. Hamilton named captains, completing the officer commissions.
Cincinnati mayor cancels street meeting permits after discovering two Mormon elders sought permits for religious gatherings. Initial approval granted under assumption of faith-based services was reversed when authorities concluded Mormon teachings harmed community welfare.
Bishop Thomas F. Galler will make his annual visit to St Peters parish Tuesday night April 28th at 7:80 oclock. A large congregation is expected for confirmations. In the afternoon he will attend St Joms church services, continuing his usual custom.
