The Labor Department reports the U S unemployment rate fell to 7 percent in April, the lowest since early in the recession 29 months prior. Four die as small plane crashes in California oil field
A Beechcraft single engine plane ran out of fuel while approaching Fullerton Airport, crashing in an Orange County oil field. Four aboard died including Ernest J Scott and wife Mary of City Utah, Herman and Patricia Aziz of Page. Pilot radioed El Toro FAA station worried about fuel as overcast skies and thick cloud cover obscured the approach. Wreckage scattered across the field. FAA chief Jerry Bogan said radar contact was lost near the end.

Arizona Strip study under way for grazing impacts
The Bureau of Land Management launches an environmental impact review of 3.5 million acres on the Arizona Strip used by Utah cattlemen and a sheep operator. Dennis Carter says about 25,000 cattle yield over $623,000 and $1 million in indirect local spending annually. The eight point study will assess grazing proposals, land use, wildlife habitat, and mitigation. Carter notes sheep decline reflects operator choice, not BLM policy. Water Rates Hike In St George To Fund Utilities
St George city council approved a municipal water rate increase to fund expanded exploration and end subsidies by the electric department. Minimum monthly charge rises from 3 to 5 dollars, with 1000 gallon steps up to 30 cents and higher charges for usage over 200000 gallons. Residential users show about 48 to 49 percent increases. Council reviews itinerant business licensing in St George
