Wholesale prices rise in April amid farm and food surge

Washington reports a 0.6 percent jump in wholesale prices for April led by the largest farm and food price increase in a year. Administration economists say the rise does not signal renewed inflation and expect the annual rate to stay at or below 6 percent, despite near-term policy concerns and the presidential race.

Washington 119th Birthday Party Plans and Parade

Washington celebrates its 119th anniversary with a Bicentennial program. Salt Lake City UPI reports the Mormon Church ended its probe into how Howard Hughes allegedly routed a will to the 25th floor of its world headquarters. Officials, including security staff formerly with police and FBI, failed to locate the document after four weeks of inquiry.

Utah Weather: Pacific Storm Brings Showers and Cool Temperatures

A Pacific storm moving into the inland west heads toward Utah, bringing cool moist air, showers, and a few thunderstorms. The system stays over Utah through tonight then breaks up Friday, with gusty winds near thunderstorm centers and cool highs in the 50s to 70s. Weekend looks drier with 70s to 80s and cool nights.

Eleven Arrested in Cedar City Drug Bust

Utah Liquor Enforcement Agency and Cedar City Police arrested 11 adults for distribution or possession of controlled substances after a five month probe. The suspects include Linda McConnell and James Vaughn among Cedar City residents. one juvenile was referred to juvenile court. Bail set by Judge Christian Ronnow. Arrests occurred at 7 pm Tuesday across Cedar City.

Romney urges student voters to engage in politics at Dixie College

Utah attorney general Vernon Romney urged Dixie College students to participate in politics, saying paying “rent” for time on the planet through public service is noble. He criticized federal programs, taxation, and inflation, warned of government waste, and touted cooperation between business and government while outlining cases of fraud brought by his office.

Local Candidates File for Utah House Seat in Washington County

St George attorney J. Macarthur Wright announced his Democratic bid for the Utah House of Representatives representing Washington County. A 1953 U of U graduate, he served as a captain in the Air Force and later earned Stanford Law degree. Wright active in youth programs and local commerce, he chairs Redevelopment efforts and teaches in Bloomington Ward. Wright, 45, married to Peggy Oldroyd with four children, emphasizes improved government at all levels. ST. GEORGE also notes Ronald Wesley Nelson filed as a Democratic candidate for the two year Washington County Commissioner seat, joining Floyd Ence, Republican, and incumbent Murray Webb. Nelson, a St George businessman and former wildlife federation officer, has strong LDS involvement and multiple family members named.
