Survivors Arrive in U S After Deadly 747 Collision

Carter faces test on 50 dollar tax rebate and plans
President Carter faces his first major partisan test over a $50 tax rebate while preparing about 10 messages to Congress on topics including the energy program welfare reform and a consumer agency. A food stamp reform proposal, a consumer agency and an environmental program are expected in coming weeks with talks on hospital cost caps and national health insurance. He also plans to inform Congress of foreign arms sales requests while delaying decisions on about $3 billion more pending new guidelines expected in mid April.

Dead toll rises in Canary Islands crash with KLM pilot fault claim

FBI reports 1976 violent crime fall and overall flat crime level
The FBI data show murders muggings rapes and assaults down five percent in 1976 the first decline since 1960 while total serious crime stayed level with 1975. Burglaries and motor vehicle thefts fell, but larceny rose five percent.
