Senate OKs emergency drought relief bill to cut damages
The Senate approved emergency legislation by 92 votes to zero to provide up to 200 million dollars to minimize drought damage in Western states. It funds emergency plans, conservation, irrigation improvements, and water redistribution to protect crops and sustain production. Senator Henry M Jackson called for swift action as snowpack and reservoir data forecast severe drought this summer with some areas at near zero water.

SUSC students reenacted a disaster in a Manzanita Hall drill to test readiness of emergency services. Hurricane Stake elects Beatty as president during large conference
Dennis Beatty 47 principal of the Elementary school was ordained and sustained as Hurricane Stake president replacing Cleo Jack Lemmon who will soon depart. Bruce R. McConkie, an LDS apostle, performed the ordination as the conference drew one of its largest attendances. Also ordained were Last as first counselor Lemmon as second counselor Sanders as executive secretary and Stout as stake clerk. High Council vacancies filled by Sanders Lewis DeMille and Ewell. Beatty, a Toquerville native, is a Hurricane native alumnus of SUSC and Utah State University. His wife Marzare, and three children Charisse Luann John and Alisa. Dr Lasi, first counselor, is a Gunnison native and BYU and U of Utah medical school graduate. Last, a former Hurricane ward bishop and local official, now serves on the county school board.
