Tax credits approved to boost solar and insulation use

Washington senior lawmakers moved to back energy credits up to 2150 for solar and wind energy devices and up to 400 for home insulation and related equipment. The House Ways and Means Committee endorsed the credits amid Carter administration support as Congress eyed a July 4 recess.

Israel urged to withdraw from all occupied Arab lands

The Carter administration urged Israel to withdraw from Sinai, Golan, West Bank, and Gaza with no preconditions. Begin signaled limits, while Israel’s Dinitz said negotiations are possible on all three fronts without preconditions. The State Department pressed for a durable peace and noted UN Security Council framework.

Man killed in hang glider fall near Kanarra Mountain

Robert Williams a 32 year old Las Vegas hang gliding instructor died Sunday on Kanarra Mountain when a harness failed and the parachute did not deploy. He fell about 100 feet near Graff Peak as witnesses and patrols transported the body to Las Vegas for burial. Williams left behind a wife Phyllis and three children ages seven nine and 13.

Blaze ignites Maury County Jail cell killing 42

A jail visitor testified he supplied cigarettes to a runaway youth who used them to start a fire in a padded cell at Maury County Jail. Forty two people died in the blaze, with five members from each of two families among the dead. Funeral services were planned for multiple victims including William Buck Rowland’s wife and relatives and for members of the Calvin and Janice Golden family.

Utah Governor calls special session to tackle drought prison and budget

Gov. Scott Matheson convened the Utah Legislature in a three day special session to address drought relief overcrowding at the state prison and growth of state government. He proposed buying Ajax Press facility for 2.3 million to relieve space shortages and outlined funds for drought and prison relief including a 970000 short term measure. He cited 1.5 million spent earlier from regional and other sources and urged allocation of 15 million drought relief and 4 million to revolving loan funds.

Shumate explains suit to Cedar Valley protesters

Attorney James L. Shumate outlines a four count class action in Fifth District Court challenging the county service area. He contends improper procedures under Chapter 29 of Title 17, disputed $18,000 annual D and O payments, emergency clause legality, and exclusion of Summit residents. Plaintiffs include Rodney Brady and others. notice to class will be by publication and mail.
