American journalist told he is free to leave Soviet Union

Vance says Brezhnev pick won't alter ties

Secretary of State Cyrus Vance said naming Leonid Brezhnev president of the Soviet Union will not change U S relations with Moscow and noted Spain's first free elections in four years as a political milestone. He spoke during talks with Latin American foreign ministers in Grenada and before heading to Trinidad Tobago.

Iron Citizens Committee formed to challenge county garbage action

Cedar City Utah. A citizen elected committee named Iron Citizens Committee met Tuesday night selecting officers Rodney Brady as Chairman Wade Helms as Vice Chairman Kay Nielson as Secretary and outlining objectives. They seek to test the legality of Utah Code 17 34 used to impose garbage collection and to determine if civil rights were violated by the district. They question the contract with D and O Sanitation and the 18000 subsidy. An appointment with James L Shumate at 7 am was set to present a 100 retainer. Fire destroys sheds as storage tank explodes near homes

Fire started in a woodpile and spread to a 250 gallon gas tank, causing an explosion that destroyed sheds and corrals behind two residences. Four units from Parowan and Cedar City fought the blaze from about 6:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. No injuries reported. cause under investigation. Witnesses mentioned children with sparklers. wind direction could have worsened the danger. The property belonged to Mrs Arden Richards and the Harold Smith family.

Brian Head Officials Cut Their Own Salaries in Town Meeting

Brian Head trustees voted to cut their meeting stipends from 25 to 50 dollars monthly. The board discussed the proposed 543,000 budget for next year, the water association changes including meter installation, and plans to start a new well site on June 20.

CAB upholds Hughes Air West service deletion for Cedar City

The Civil Aeronautics Board denied Arizona Utah agencies and Cedar City Corporation oral argument on a ruling to delete Air West service to Cedar City and Page Arizona. The stay motion by Page was denied and the order could take effect in sixty days pending possible federal court action. City Manager Mike Embley said Cedar City has not responded and noted courts may be the remaining recourse.

Parowan approves zone change and housing program

Parowan City Council approved a zone change mapping south of canyon road to Brian Head from residential to commercial and authorized an ordinance banning U terms on main street intersections. The council backed low income housing funds and discussed Brian Head sewage risks, inviting Brian Head leaders to resolve cross town water concerns.
