UPI reports Labor Department data showing wholesale prices fell 0.6 percent in June led by a 6.3 percent drop in food prices from May. Farm and food costs drove the declines, except fluid milk, with green coffee and other staples easing. The WPI move suggests consumer prices may ease in coming retail stores.
Five inmates died and 62 were injured when a fire broke out in a crowded Danbury federal penitentiary cellblock. A female guard reportedly disobeyed orders and opened a door, helping others escape, while prison officials announced a board of inquiry and widespread fire-hazard reviews at other federal prisons.
Federal officials confirm neutron bomb tests occurred in the Nevada desert near Las Vegas with at least one small explosion. A source close to the program said more than one test may have happened, but effects would be minimal above ground. One survivor Chad Blevens described the moment, saying the shaft shook and he was thrown into the air.
