Arab sources say the Cairo Damascus accord to unite Egypt and Syria further isolates Col. Muammar Khadafy's Libyan regime. The pact bypasses the Federation of Arab Republics, creating a joint political command and six committees aimed at a union, with no Libya involvement. Officials seek an early Arab peace deal with Israel.
A mentally disturbed airline mechanic hijacked a United Airlines jet at San Francisco International Airport, held hostages for 14 hours, and surrendered after negotiations led by FBI officials. The hijacker, Lincoln Jones, released several hostages and was taken into custody for examination. a hostage was knifed but survived.
The Liberian tanker Argo Merchant split and dumped 7.6 million gallons of No. 6 oil into the Atlantic off Nantucket. A 100 mile slick threatens beaches and fishing grounds as Coast Guard teams work to stabilize the wreck and pump oil to forward tanks. Senator Kennedy and Representative Studds plan hearings on the disaster.
President elect Jimmy Carter interrupted Cabinet talks to fly to Chicago for Mayor Richard J Daley Funeral. He plans to announce Joseph Califano as HEW secretary and James Schlesinger for a new energy cabinet post.
U.S. government attorneys say allowing the Ku Klux Klan to use a Louisiana high school auditorium for a patriotic meeting would undermine desegregation and may justify blocking the request even at the cost of Klan free speech rights. The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Realm of Louisiana sought the Bellaire High School venue in East Baton Rouge. the school board, after HEW counsel warned of federal aid loss, reversed its initial approval amid a desegregation order.
