In St George a local committee set up a telephone line to gauge support for the Gary Gilmore execution. By Saturday afternoon more than 350 calls were logged with all callers endorsing carrying out the sentence. Some officials questioned whether the calls would influence the courts.
Gilmore and Utah State jointly faced the high court over the stay on his execution. The U S Supreme Court voted 6 3 to stay the Monday firing squad date at the request of Gilmore s mother after Utah Supreme Court denied a similar petition. Bessie Gilmore ends a 16 day hunger strike and remains distressed.
Cedar City sets a February 1 1977 bond election to finance a new municipal building. The council also reviewed the 75 76 year financial statements showing general fund expenditures of 17 million and revenues of 1 4 million, while addressing claims against the city, beer permit suspensions, and requests for traffic signals and fees.
Hurricane votes to fund EMT training for thirteen volunteers at Dixie College to operate the city ambulance under new health and safety law. The council also approves a curb and sidewalk project along U-17 and a sidewalk district on south Main street while discussing cross-town police cooperation with LaVerkin.
