In Colfax a Friday holiday event drew a large crowd for a lights parade a craft fair and a soup kitchen from noon to nine. Sharon Gieras led the craft fair with 24 vendors amid rain. Community turnout was strong and organizers hope for Saturday next year.
Colfax city officials and two council members faced a tense Regional Water Quality Control Board hearing in Sacramento over 351000 in fines for wastewater plant violations. The board did not reduce the amount, but allowed directing the money to fix the city plant. Ongoing violations have created a 5 to 6 million dollar project to build a new plant by 2006, likely funded by loans and some grants.
Colfax officials failed to name a new mayor Tuesday, leaving Mayor Sherrie Blackmun in place until the Jan. 13 meeting. A potential shift in the method for selecting the mayor was debated as several options were discussed and then set aside.
Colfax Elementary School Board accepted the resignations of seventh and eighth grade teacher Mark Thompson after years of service. Executive session discussed circumstances with no details released. Cheryl Axton named District President, Pat Grimes chosen Board Clerk. Monthly meetings set for the third Monday, except January and February second Mondays. First interim financial report for 2003-2004 approved.
