Shorter Day For Operators In Railroads Pushes 9 Hour Plan
Washington March 2 American railways agreed to comply with the nine hour law by March 4 prompting temporary layoffs of thousands of railway workers. Officials say the move will reduce operating expenses despite expected travel and shipping disruption. Rail executives cited a banking crisis and revenue losses as causes, with some claiming the industry faced widespread layoffs and the risk of receiverships as lines struggle to meet payrolls. The hearings revealed stark shortages of equipment and idle trains, though some witnesses warned the current shortage would ease with renewed prosperity.
