School levy debate limits county tax in Independent district
Mr A Andrew acting clear of the Behoo board sent a letter to the attorney general's office asking if the board of county commissioners can levy a tax for school purposes and the latest date an Independent district may levy. B S Crow replies that the county board must levy no more than five mills. The levy should be after trustees receive total assessed valuation from the county auditor, expected between late August and early September. County valuation about 12 100,000 means 4 60,000 to be apportioned for school purposes. Andrew says with increased valuation and levy the trustees can set the school levy below 10 mills this year, reducing over half from last year with a 20 mill levy.
