It is with regret that we announce the death of Mr Hiram Brentnall which occurred suddenly on Monday morning last. He was 52 and son of the late Aldred and Frances Brentnall of Melbourne, brother of Alfred George Charles Aldred Lilian Edith and Elizabeth i deceased. Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing relatives.
A strong wheat section at the Royal Agricultural Show featured 68 samples across eight classes. Judges from the Victorian Department of Agriculture assessed entries at the State Cereal Laboratories on bushel weight, protein quality and quantity, and appearance. Nineteen varieties were shown, led by Insignia and Pinnacle, with high quality hard wheats like Pusa 4 winning the championship. Notable competitors included G A Cameron of Warracknabeal and W G and O C Pietsch of Dimboola, who tied for first in several classes. Pietsch’s Quadrat entries had the highest protein. Champion was H Formby of Bunbartha with Pura 4.
Mr Gemmell was re elected for another term as president of the hospital committee after offices were declared vacant. Treasurer and vice presidents were named, sub committees formed, and accounts for August approved. Land purchase near the hospital and resignations noted, with illness granting leave of absence for James Jones.
Donations totaling £1532 boost the Shepparton show financials. President Mr Gee Billingham praised the strong entry and donation response. Local businesses led by J. Perry & Co with £100 and others giving £50 and smaller gifts, all hoped for good weather to break records.
The project outline details a new Dairy Husbandry Research Centre at Ellinbank near Warragul with four experimental dairy units and lab facilities. A large building program at Glenormiston will start this year, with multi-year completion. Research will cover pastures, crops, and animal husbandry at Werribee and Glenormiston, with a diploma course in dairying planned at Glenormiston.
Marjorie Mawards was guest of honor at a surprise party at her parents home Mr and Mrs L F Edwards. Guests sent best wishes for her forthcoming marriage to Mr Jeff Mirams of Warragul with a silver cake dish presented by Scots Church congregation. The wedding is set for September 29 at Scots Church at 2 30 pm.
