CWA Welcomes Mrs Higgs at Cobram Branch Meeting

The Cobram CWA monthly meeting on September 6 welcomed visitor Mrs Higgs Past Group Secretary. An arts crafts and antiques display on October 13 was discussed with a plan for a table of work by new Australians. Door prizes and donations noted. nominations for office bearers due next meeting.

Cobram Lawn Tennis Club Elects Officers for New Season

At the Cobram Lawn Tennis Club annual meeting Vic Cleave was re elected president for a second term with S McGurgan as secretary. New officers include J Fowles and W Buzza as vice presidents, Blake as treasurer, Grigg as auditor, and a mixed committee list. Membership fees set at £3 3s for men and £2 10s for ladies. A working bee at the courts is planned for Sunday morning with all members urged to attend.

Wings for air giant Saunders-Roe Princess moves to water edge

England's 140 ton Saunders-Roe Princess, the largest flying boat, will exit the hangar in about two months. Outer wing sections will be fitted on the water, with launches planned early next year. Test pilot Geoffrey Tyson will fly trials in the Solent after launch. The ship rides on an eight wheel trolley, surrounded by scaffolding, with 148 feet from nose to tail. Eight engines are paired for jet power and a top speed over 300 mph. It aims to fly over 5000 miles without refueling.

Maisie Rooks Wins 6 Mile Women's Handicap

In Cobram a fast 6 mile women’s handicap saw Marlene Johnson and Maisie Rooks set early pace from scratch. At halfway they held a clear lead while Val Millsteed and Gladys Downie battled for time honors. Rooks won by two lengths as Downie closed to a half wheel behind.

Farmers Field Day at Werribee Show Week Feature

The State Research Farm at Werribee hosts a field day on Friday September 22 inviting farmers and others in primary production. Visitors will see irrigated pastures, cereal breeding work in Victoria, and dairy, poultry, and parasite control demonstrations. Official briefings begin 1.50 pm at the farm gates with a special train from Spencer Street at 12.30 pm returning 5.53 pm.

Valiant Jet Bomber Leads World for RAF

The Vickers Valiant is the RAFs first four engined jet bomber powered by four Avon engines. It flies at about 600 miles per hour and, per Air Minister Arthur Henderson, gives Britain a world lead in attacking aircraft. He says it surpasses the Canberra in range speed endurance and bomb load and has been ordered in substantial numbers.
