At the Irrigators annual meeting on August 24 and later the District Engineer J R Dunne outlined prioritized works. He noted weather often paused urgent tasks but listed completed items from May 16 to September 3 including 31 chains trenching and back fill, 113 jobs such as leaks and culvert repairs, and 7 new meter outlets.
Senator C W Sandford will present the case for a no vote at the coming referendum to ban the Communist party. He will address a public meeting at Mechanics Hall Cobram on Monday night next.
The Diggers Day by Cobram Sub Branch RSL drew 131 golfers and visitors, raising over £460 with an expected £300 for Legacy. Prizes awarded in Scratch Events to A Marxson and W Bowie, 18 Holes to C Walsh and G Steward, and other high scores noted. Souvenir Button No 435 drawn by D Spence with £25 prize.
Early spring suits sowing perennial pasture where irrigation is reliable. Land must be well graded to allow uniform water spread and drainage. Poor grading leads to long delays, uneven growth, and failed establishment, so postpone sowing if grading cannot be finished before September.
Cobram cyclists return to club racing after the Cobram Citizens 100 Mile Road Race. The senior and junior road championships feature women racers. Bob Shadforth is favored in the open 25 mile time trial, with Malcolm Boag and Tom Markey as strong Cobram riders. Colin Cornish leads the juniors while Noel West Terry Sumner John Haw and Frank Goodman challenge in the groups.
Jerilderie defeated Barooga 98 to 88 to clinch the premiership place as Barooga pushed a late rally to level before a final shot sealed Jerilderie’s win. Barooga’s Smith Cullen Walsh Toohey and Whitty starred for the defeated side.
At halftime Mr W Bruce presented trophies to M Toohey of Barooga and M Mason of Jerilderie for tying as the season's best and fairest players, following an excellent performance.
