Causes of Soldier Settlement Failures in New South Wales
A survey by the Law Department of New South Wales shows only 4456 of 976 returned soldiers were on farm lands as of June 1943. The Rural Reconstruction Commission reports main causes include lack of industry, planning experience, capital, unsuitable areas, and financial institution issues. Australia awarded 886 decorations by May 1943, with seven out of ten joining the Australian Fighting Forces. Merchant shipping averaged 100,000 tons monthly for repairs and coordination in ports.
