Public meeting leads to formation of a local Red Cross branch with R Laidlaw as president and J V Bourchier A Ross-Soden elected vice presidents and secretary treasurer. Also notes on Yarrawonga massed bands event and local weather records.
In Jeriléerie Police Court before Mr I Beavers the inspector of stock said Bergin, in charge of travelling stock, failed to present his permit. He was fined £2 with £2 10s costs. Advertisements announce 50 apprenticeships with Victorian Railways for youths aged 15 to 18, plus Certificate holders eligible, with applications due by 4 pm October 27 in Melbourne.
Thomas Quinane died Thursday after years on the goldfields of Western Australia then farming in Barooga district. He was son of Daniel and Mrs Quinane of Colac and Tébga. Survived by daughter Catherine Mrs F Bellis and son John. Burial service conducted by Rev Fr Galvin.
Wording notes that Ww. F. Lee has taken over the well known Mil form from Mr S M Russell. It states that quotes and particulars are supplied for all classes of red gum timber and invites future orders to be written to Ww. F. Lee at Red Gum Sawmills Barooga.
The meeting reviewed financials for Sep 1 to Oct 10 showing receipts at 46 pounds 19 shillings 8 pence and expenditures 40 pounds 8 shillings 8 pence including 41 pounds 10 pence interest on overdraft. Overdraft stood at 1855 pounds 4 shillings 0 pence, down 52 pounds 15 shillings 3 pence since March 30 1890. The hall may be used by Red Cross and kin deed organizations at cost of fighting. Charges for functions were revised with reductions in halls and dancing end dam, concerts cut by 1 shilling, kitchen use with hall reduced by 5 shillings.
The note records Mr W Comnelly injured in a recent car accident and still hospitalized at Lisieux after a heavy fall at his residence. It mentions Mr Harris, the yard porter at Cobram railway station, moving to Nu where he will succeed someone named Wilson. An engagement announcement for Mice Tae oi hw waka vrgt ttt and Someph Wittred is also noted.
A public meeting in Cobram discussed forming a Comforts Fund to supply essentials for troops on home service and debated creating a Red Cross branch. Mrs Coldwell and Miss Gemmell pushed for ladies to lead first aid lessons with officers elected including President M D O Dwyer and Vice-presidents Mrs Coldwell and Mrs Edwards.
RACV delegates at Melbourne Conference urged clearer rules at major street intersections and extended rights of way. They cited unmarked cross streets and fatigue with two vehicle rules, especially bicycles abreast, as ongoing country traffic issues.
