Fine gesture toward scouts grants new scout hall site
At a Cobram Group Committee meeting in the Fire Brigade Hall on Tuesday October 30, parents learned that the land for the new Scout Hall has been gifted in full. The group soruced the larger site after Mr J E C Radcliffe offered to sell it for the amount raised by selling the small adjoining plot once donated by Mr William Stewart. Legal delays have now cleared and the generous gift is fully realized.

Warning On Brown Vegetable Weevil Appears In State
The Victorian Department of Agriculture warns tomato and vegetable growers about a surge of the brown vegetable weevil. Wet winter weather delayed paddock preparation, increasing weed growth and letting many adults invade tomato paddocks in the Goulburn Valley. Weevils are about one third inch long, dull brown, with a pale V on the wing covers. Night activity and daytime soil hiding are noted. Control methods include bait mixtures, dusts of DDT or lead arsenate, and sprays of lead arsenate or DDT emulsion. If damage is mild, dip seedlings in lead arsenate or DDT before planting.

Salmon find home by scent say scientists
Busy Bee reports US scientists led by Arthur Hasler propose salmon locate their natal streams by smell. Substances in streams from vegetation and soils create distinct odors that salmon can detect and remember. The London Express notes bees are less sensitive to scent, with Dr Colin Butler saying bees must be very close to a flower to sense its perfume.
