Ice Island fiasco and the Habakkuk dream during the war
A BBC style recount of Geoffrey Pyke's plan to build huge unsinkable ice aircraft carriers named Habakkuk. The piece traces how scientists mocked the idea then backed it, how trials showed ice melted and had no real strength, and how the plan collapsed, shifting to the Mulberry Harbor approach. It notes the Quebec Conference decision and the eventual demise of Habakkuk as impractical.
