Bank staffer moved as new transfer looms

Mr R C Cocks, seven years with Nathalla branch of the State Savings Bank, is told to prepare for transfer. His successor will be Mr M J Willcox of Strathmerton. Mr John McEwen MHR for Hebuca will be the Country Party candidate for Indi at the next Federal elections. McEwen has risen to the front rank of debistors in the Commonwealth Parliament and has long fought for the man on the land.

Church of England Ball at Cobram a successful event

The St. Margaret's Church committee held the annual ball in Cobram last Wednesday with about eighty five couples in attendance. Decorations featured chrysanthemums autumn leaves and greenery, with streamers and color matched stage lighting. Gervasoni's orchestra provided music to enthusiastic acclaim and L Lonergan acted as MC. Supper impressed guests and Miss M Lonergan played during the interval.

A severe thunderstorm swept the district on Thursday night with vivid lightning and very heavy rain. Cobram post office logged 33 points while Nathalia and parts of the northern district suffered terrific hail. A weekend sequence brought 53 points more rain, with totals reaching 86 points in some areas. Farmers seek further falls to secure crops and pastures.

Death of Mr Thomas McNeil Millar Cobram Headmaster

Mr Thomas McNeil Millar 72 died in a private hospital at Mordialloc on May 24. A longtime Victorian Education Department teacher and Cobram headmaster from 1892, he chaired a Cadet Troop and organized annual tetra polis trips and outstanding school concerts. Survived by two sons and two daughters Constance Stanley Bruce and Marjorie.

Death of W H Carts former Cobram resident

The death of William Henry Curtin aged 73 occurred at his St Kilda residence on Thursday May 21 after a long illness. An early Cobram resident who arrived in 1888 he ran a general store on Main Street later sold to Brown Corke Co. He developed a citrus orchard later sold to stepson S H Scott and retired to St Kilda in 1917. He supported Cobram progress through the Mechanics Institute Agricultural Society and Methodist Church and served with Red Cross during the War. Survived by widow and a son, his remains were interred in St Kilda Cemetery on Saturday May 2.
