Opinion column argues Melbourne’s coal reliance harms the nation and urges mass relocation to the Murray Valley. It advocates diverting Snowy River water, speeding hydro projects, and expanding irrigation to banish coal and propel Australia to economic strength.

The Cobram branch unanimously elected John Holland as delegate to the Melbourne annual conference July 27 to 31 with a 6 pound allowance. The ladies auxiliary offered to pay expenses for auxiliary delegates and will finance their own Saleen DIGGERS tournament plans end of August face committee changes resignations and letters to state president on a cheese factory proposal. Digger Vern Benjamin resigns from the tournament committee and bids farewell as Lonergan notes his last Cobram meeting and Maryborough departure.
Miss Mary Cassidy and June Harris left yesterday for a week away. Miss Moira Walsh, on Mooroopna nursing staff, holidaying with her parents at Cobram. Mrs H K Crozier and Barbara holidaying at Morwell. Elizabeth Bowyer, a Friendship Club announcer at 3SR Shepparton, died recently. funeral held. Mr Ian Helmann and family welcomed a new baby. Belin Sea appears in a garbled line. Fred Lummas receiving treatment at Mooroopna Hospital.
Early Wednesday of last week the engine of the southwest mail train jumped rails between Galong and Harden dragging carriages apart. Four people died and many were injured including Keith Shuttleworth of Lenton. Finley residents aboard suffered no injuries. Finley proprietors aided victims and local help coordinated doctor visits and possible transfusion needs.
The RSL executive meeting with settlers set for 2 pm at Yarroweyah Hall aims to address regional conditions. Mr Michel leads a set of resolutions, seeking a first-hand briefing from Mr Holland on soldier settlement ahead of the Ulgra conference.
