Onion smut alarm reaches South Australia feared in Victoria
Victorian horticultural officers warn that onion smut, a serious disease affecting onions and allied plants, has appeared in South Australia but not yet in Victoria. If it arrives it could devastate crops since the pathogen survives in soil for at least twelve years and is hard to eradicate. Growers should monitor crops and send early infection specimens to the Government Biologist at Plant Research Laboratories, Swan Street, Burnley.
