Methodists set morning at Strathmerton 11 a.m. and afternoon at Yarroweyah 2 p.m. Rev W K Bartlett B A B Sc leads the sessions with 7 30 p.m. prayer at Cobram.
Mr H E Harding chief divisional engineer of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission told the Goulburn Regional Committee at Cobram that raising water levels in channels could lift supply by 10 to 15 percent and aim for 25 to 30 percent within six to seven years with the existing system. He said surplus water in broken weather could be used by irrigators without harming their annual quotas by contacting the District Engineer or bailiff. Dr Moss noted a 1936 questionnaire on taking more water and Harding said the responses are bound in blue covers awaiting more water.
Visitors from Rutherglen Kyabram Numurkah Berrigan Tocumwal Benalla Shepparton and Finley joined an all day bowls tourney at Cobram. 88 ladies competed with Numurkah Mesdames Baker Hodge Galt and Davies beating Rutherglen Mesdames Barber Ackerley Jasper Sheridan 3 10 in the final. Numurkah player Mrs Hyde won the spider and Mrs T N Harris of Cobram won the Christmas cake raffle.
The Friendship Club held a social in the supper room of Mechanics Hall on Friday afternoon. A smaller attendance due to bad weather, a brisk trading stall run by president Mrs F Markey and Mrs Loof, and an afternoon tea. Barry Sullivan sang Good-bye while prizes were awarded for jumble flowers stepping the distance and a Christmas cake crafted by Mrs Loof and Mr Brady. Mrs A Cook of Cobram won the cake. Door hostess was Mrs J Wright with tea aides Mesdames Stewart Brady Holland and Crosby.
Younghusband Ltd submitted their fifth catalogue in Melbourne on November 24. Top price recorded was 160d for four bales of anafcom from Englefield. Local price listed shows Cobram fleece Hay in square 993d, prices 75d and 66d.
At the Bank of New South Wales 136th AGM Sir Colin Sinclair reviewed Australia’s year. Housing advances reached £30,000,000 about one fifth of total Australian advances while deposits rose 12 percent to £424,000,000 and liquid assets to £241,000,000. The bank posted a profit of £1,117,835 as lending narrowed £12,000,000 due to traders clearing stock.
In Cobram court yesterday four National Service trainees faced charges for failing to render service. Ernest James Stewart admitted missing a parade after marriage and insufficient notice. he was fined £5 and committed to Capt. Peers. Raymond William Hyde and Thomas Alfred Koopman also pleaded guilty and received £5 fines and custody commitments. Maxwell John Graham, despite guilty pleas, produced medical certificates and was dismissed.
William John Lavitt of Strathmerton applied at Cobram court for National Service deferment. He said his citrus orchard and market garden on Yulupna Island were busy in January and he lacked help. The application was not opposed and deferment for six months was granted by Mr. G S Catlow.
The Postmaster-General said that of 510 lb of Australian mail for the Americas aboard the B.C.P.A. aircraft that crashed near San Francisco on October 29 only 6 lb of unregistered articles were recovered. He added that claims for loss of registered and insured items will await Civil Aeronautics Board inquiry results to determine the cause.
