Unseasonal Heat Marks Start of Summer in Murray Valley
Last Saturday brought the hottest day of the summer as the season began December 1. A brisk easterly wind pushed thermometers to 195 degrees in some reports. A cooling southeasterly change followed Sunday with light rain showers. Mr E Brensing, secretary of the Murray Valley Irrigation League, asked the Water Supply Commission about irrigation progress. The reply noted war-related staff shortages and design delays, with costs estimated at £900,000 excluding the Yarra Wonga weir and £516,000 spent on channel construction. The Commission aims to finish quickly, despite high interest charges.

Opening of Cobram Green Promises Busy Bowls Season
The Cobram Green opened Wednesday night with a large attendance of members and prospective members. Mr J T McFarlane welcomed two new players and expressed hope for a successful season. Mrs Mulcahy threw the first jack and Mrs McFarlane bowled the first bowl. competitions will run each Wednesday with all members asked to attend at 7 45 to start promptly.
