Stokes Opposed in Shire Elections

The Deputy Returning Officer has received nominations from Dr M A Stokes and Mr N H Jordan to fill the vacancy caused by Cr Stokes retirement in the North West Riding of the Shire of Tungapak. It is believed the other three retiring councillors will be returned unopposed. The Shire election will take place on Saturday January 27, 1940.

Cobram Kennels Dominant at Shepparton Kennel Show

At the Shepparton Kennel Show on Saturday July 30 Cobram Kennels took multiple prizes. Gold Labrador bitches Murray Mary and Murrayside Larry earned several firsts plus reserved and other placings. Also prize winners included Brackley Belle and Kinchie Cherie with top finishes.

Cobram Red Cross Annual Meeting Held

Cobram Branch of the Australian Red Cross held its annual meeting. Officers elected include president Miss M Hanrahan vice president Mrs Haw and Mrs Collens honorary secretary treasurer Miss G Evans and honorary auditor Mr A Dixon. The branch reported £37 12 6 sent to headquarters last year. To date in 1949 HQ sent 12 rugs 12 trays and 12 hot water bag covers to Cobram Hospital. Next meeting set for Friday November 2. former members urged to rejoin.

Cobram Wins Loan Pennant for Subscriptions

Cobram secured a £5000 quota in the last Commonwealth Security Loan but £8540 was subscribed. A pennant recognizing Cobram subscribers was given to Mr A N Dixon, manager of the State Savings Bank Cobram, who will handle secretarial duties for the Cobram Loans Committee replacing Mr P W Bales.

Cobram CWA Plans Meeting and Community Projects

Cobram branch of the CWA held its August meeting with 26 members, four new. Topics included university scholarships for high school students and a proposal to route the Cobram district under Numurkah headquarters. Knitted items for Britain were displayed and sponge competition won by Mrs Collens senior. The group invites attendance at the September 1 meeting and the Home Science Van visit on August 15.

Crute and Walsh Win Golf Titles at Muckatah

G Crute won the 18 holes handicap at Muckatah links with 66 nett on Sunday. Mrs J K Walsh captured the ladies 9 holes handicap with 30 nett. Card totals show Crute 66 tied with E McDermott for runner up and a series of strong scores from local players.
