Church services at St Margaret's Cobram on August 12 1951 include Holy Communion Sunday School and Evening Prayer. In memoriam notices honor deceased relatives dated 1949 1911 and 1951. Personal visitors to Mildura and Cobram area described with names and brief travel notes.
Delegates from Cobram and nearby towns attended the North-East quarterly conference in Wangaratta on Wednesday morning. The event ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Mr Harry Back as president and Miss Anne Johnson as secretary presiding. Attendees included delegates from Seymour Euroa Myrtleford Wangaratta Warby Peechelba Connstown and Boorman. A young farmers ball at Peechelba capped the day.
Australian National Airways launches a tri weekly Tocumwal to Dubbo Orange service starting Monday. Flights depart Tocumwal at 10 05 p m for Dubbo via Wagga and Parkes and return to Melbourne arriving 4 55 p m. Passengers may connect to Sydney and Adelaide links via Skymaster and Sky Master. Local agents Holland and Bourke Cobram advertise fares and information.
Cobram cyclists eye major races the Cobram 100-Mile Road Race and the Australian Women's Championship in Brisbane with next weekend's events serving as tests. Gladys Downie and Val Millsteed set send off social plans, while riders train over 26 and 5 miles with campaigns for a 32-mile course next weekend.
Llandrillo ran away with the Grand National Steeple at Flemington and is fit for his big task. The field looks weaker than at Flemington with Grey Morn and Jung Bahadur as potential threats while Bronze Laddie Maelstrom and others seek upset.
The Arkaringa Hurdle features Hiatus and Quetzal among others with Midhurst favored for honesty and freshness. Hiatus rises in weight to 10.8 while Fairy Fable and Two Ales also hold chances as the field appears weaker than recent weeks.
Clutha looks strong for the Malakoff Stakes over two miles after back to back wins. Vantage and Lucky Mascot face stiff tests as Welkin Sun aims for another win following a Moondah Plate strong finish. Other contenders include Conjurer Jolly Jester and Gay Saint with a mix of staying types or strong form.
Mrs W E O Dwyer died in Melbourne on Tuesday last week. Reputedly the widow of the late Mr W E O Dwyer, she long resided in the Savernake district where she was highly regarded by many friends. Her remains were laid to rest in Avenel Cemetery on the following Thursday. A remark by Stephen Schlitzen notes how easily a mental note can be made or misplaced.
The third annual Soldier Settlers Ball at Yarroweyah Hall on August 1 was a financial and social success. Miss Nye of Barooga won Belle of the Ball, while Mrs Hicks of Yarroweyah took Matron of the Ball. The waltzing contest was won by Mr and Mrs W Farrell with runners up Miss D Buncle and Mr Vining and Mrs H Twigg and Mr Stewart.
