Rate Collector E. E. Bartlett reports March rate collections totaling general rate 2/19, sanitary rate 1/10, and interest 0/15/5, with a total of 80/2/10. Outstanding rates as of 30/9/39 amount to 5204/8/6, fees paid 508/2/6, grand total 6005/8/6.
At Universal Hall the Bod y Shire Council debated a proposed Saturday half holiday for county officers. The discussion referenced a forecast for 22m and divided opinion among officials and councillors. Some argued the plan would align with progressive views while others warned it could unsettle workers and lead to unrest.
The Inspector reports three infectious disease cases for the month two diphtheria and one scarlet fever plus two mensusles. An inspection at Katamatite River camp meets Health Act requirements for sanitation and tents. A dangerous structure near the water tower was ordered removed. The Engineer reports inspections of roads from Yousrang to Burramine West State School show steep invert at the E and W road entrance and an abrupt N and S intersection hazard. Proposals include reconstructing and graveling sections between Panter and Panter Yabba, installing an opening in the road near Panter’s house, appointing a Works Department supervisor for gutter works at Cobram and nearby towns, and repairs to the T. McCluskey forest road with a raised riser and 10 chains of farming and clearing work.
The Cobram Progress Association pushed for a municipal garbage system with rates not to exceed 18 per year. The Council planned to set a rate near 18, recommends tendering for the service, and to clear a drain along the railway line once the railway authorities act.
The Tungamah St James RSL demands the council start an accurate local record of all naval military and air force enrollments within the shire. Farewell committees to forward names of enlistees. council to act immediately to compile a complete list postwar.
Denton council hears Melbourne Henry George League plea urging written protest to the Federal Government against a five year renewal of the sugar agreement. The motion, supported by Dr Gemmell and Dr Mulquiney, argues the renewal would cost Australians billions and should be opposed in the public interest.
The Tungymah Council met on Monday to discuss two items of correspondence. Attending were President Oliver, Kelly, G Teague, Batey, Chapman, Mulquiney, Lawrence W. Ryan, Christe, Mills and Genumel.
