A busy Danville notes observances at the Methodist church and a Red Cross fundraiser from Royal Theatre. Families, reunions, and visits span Indianapolis to Huntington County with gatherings at the Masonic Home and Christian church events. Obituaries include Wm. Sanders and Mrs. Henry Howell with funeral details and floral tributes.
Dr. Ettie McCollum Jones spoke at a Methodist church franchise meeting urging registration before August 20 to secure votes for the constitutional convention election on September 18. She argued for equal suffrage and cited war and governance issues to show women’s leadership.
Frank Arlington, a book agent from Greencastle, collapsed from heat Friday evening on West Main street. He was taken to Dr. C. J. Slope’s office for care, spent a night there, and resumed his journey the next day. his home is in the east.
Thomas Awbrey died suddenly at his home south of town last Sunday afternoon after being found in the yard. Born October 19, 1852 in Louisville Kentucky, he died June 21 1916 aged 64 years 8 months and 1 day. He leaves a large family including ten children and many grandchildren along with a sister and several brothers. He was a longtime member and elder in the Christian church at Coatesville where funeral rites were conducted by Rev Don A McKinnon on June 26 with burial in Masten cemetery.
The Eighteenth Indiana battery reunion at Greencastle lists veterans and former officers. Capt M N Beck recounts the unit formed in 1862 from Putnam Montgomery and Vigo counties with Lilly Hartman Scott Beck and Rippetoe as officers. The battery aided Louisville defense and fought at Murfreesboro Tullahoma Chattanooga Atlanta Nashville and through the Selma Montgomery Columbus and Macon campaigns ending with Jeff Davis captured. Current living officers are Capt Beck and Lieutenants W B Rippetoe and David Rippetoe.
Library activity shows 851 books loaned. Lockman bindery bound 47 books and 12 volumes of magazines. One book The Clansman was donated by Mrs. Hlerdis Harlan. Recent acquisitions include Famous Sculptor Photography for Young People The Story of the Battle Hymn of the Republic Women of the Bible Community and the Citizen Captain Stomffield's Visit to Seaven The Virgin and The Indifference of Zulick.
The Red Cross apportionment for West Clay township’s three precincts was oversubscribed during the allotted raise period. West precinct held one third of 800 dollars, about 266.66, and gifts from lodges and Sunday schools plus subscriptions gathered by Mr. Davidson raised Coatesville’s total to 281.50, surpassing its allotted amount. A list of Coatesville branch members follows, naming many individuals from the community.
Judge Thornton in Marion County Superior Court blocks legislature from extending suffrage to women for delegate voting in the constitutional convention. City elections remain open to women. The ruling prompts appeals, with potential registration delays and a push to resolve before September voting.
The Bulgin revival in Plainfield ended last Sunday with a large turnout in Hendricks county. A basket dinner preceded afternoon services with 10 conversions, and the 12 o’clock evening service drew 4,000 people and 80 conversions. Total conversions neared 500 with nearly $2,100 raised for Dr. Bulgin and assistants.
A conference chaired by William G. Irwin and including Evans Woollen and Charles Fox moved toward a temporary coal solution with Indiana operators and state officials. Negotiations will continue with nationwide defense leaders and regional operators in Chicago and Washington early next week as Governor James P. Goodrich demands prompt action to avert fuel shortages for utilities, institutions, and small consumers.
The Christian church pastor Rev C V Stainsby preached his last sermon and resigns to take a health inspector post. He departs for Vancouver to spend a month then returns to Indiana to live in Michigan City or LaPorte supervising sixteen northern counties and overseeing food industry oversight.
Mrs. W. C. Gilbert visited her son Harry at Ft Harrison and watched an Ohio company of 160 college boy soldiers eat a simple Sunday dinner. Each man served himself, rinsed dishes, and the space was kept sanitary. officers had a separate dining room and ample food stored.
The State Sunday-school convention at Terre Haute drew about 1,500 delegates plus many visitors. Hendricks county earned a front-line pennant, and a monster street parade Wednesday evening was a highlight. Next year’s bid cities include Connersville Marion Crawfordsville and South Bend. The board of directors will select the site.
A speaker denounces Congress for proposing an extra war tax or postage despite newspapers aiding the government with free publicity for recruitment. He argues newspapers bore the war burden while government expands taxes. Public sympathy and press, he asserts, should deter such levies.

Andrew A Black, reputed to be worth 100000, died in Indianapolis after an appendicitis operation and was buried at Greencastle. He is survived by a brother and three sisters. A notable wedding in Greencastle featured Bishop Thomas Nicholson and Miss Evelyn Riley. guests from across the country will reside in Chicago. Charles Edward Matson of Memphis Tenn., says he served on gun crew of the tanker John D Arche bald sunk off the French coast by a German sub. Ralph Arnett of Peru was elected county agent at Hendricks township trustees meeting. to begin July 1, Purdue and UI graduate. Jacob Page sold 30 head of fat cattle to M B Tomlinson of Indianapolis. average 1464 pounds, price 813 1 24 per hundred pounds, total over 5600, shipped to eastern market. Eighth grade graduates in Floyd township were listed with names and Meharry hall in Greencastle as commencement site.

Survived by son Joe daughter-in-law Nora three granddaughters Ruth Pauline Twyla and four grandsons Harry Harley Ralph Bernice. Charter member of New Winchester Baptist Church. Known as Aunt Lis. Funeral reference to faith and memorial sentiments.
