The Herald narrates the transition to a new typesetting machine. Old type will be melted and sold as scrap while the paper blends old and new faces this week. By next week the machine should be in full operation giving a uniform typographical appearance.
Bryce Ellett son of Mr and Mrs Sylvester Ellett injured while hailing straw on Nezzie Masten farm three miles south of Coatesville His coat allegedly caught in a fly wheel and crushed his frontal bone He was treated at his father’s home then moved to Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis where doctors say he has not regained consciousness and recovery prospects are poor
A well known farmer Walter Kivett was seriously injured when his car crossed a Pecksburg interurban track and plunged into a Highlander at high speed. He was taken to St Vincent's hospital in Indianapolis. His wife had died weeks earlier leaving two young children.
Jackson Boyd was named receiver for the Greencastle Cabinet company amid a suit by Mrs. Frank Coss whose husband formerly owned the mill. The plant has not operated for months as machinery was sold and moved to Shelbyville.
Farmers in Putnam County may buy nitrate of soda at 381.00 per ton under Food Control Act rules. Applications go to County Agent R S Fouts, with payment via local banks or designated agents. nitrate shipped on sight draft and bills of lading, with distributors handling receipts and deliveries to farmers.
Alva L Long reports from Dec 24 1918 Liverpool aboard the Empress of Britain a YMCA booklet shows Jews Catholics and Protestants uniting for common aims. An onboard entertainment featured talent from England and America with about 100 passengers present. A 3300 purse was raised for seamen families killed in the war reflecting voluntary service.
Everett Nichols of Stilesville learns his nephew Homer L Nichols who was reported dead in France is alive. He writes he is in a base hospital in France with a wounded hip after two months on the front. He hopes to return to America soon. Nichols enlisted April 5 1917 and trained at Camp Shelby Mississippi before going to France.
Mrs Clarence Glidewell aged 45 died Friday at her home at Bellmont and Washington streets Indianapolis of cancer. The body was taken to Fillmore where funeral services were held Sunday at 1 30 PM at the Christian church. She is survived by her husband and three daughters. Her parents Mr and Mrs John Thompson reside west of Fillmore.
A World War I letter from Everett D Marian to his mother dated December 14, 1918. He notes a twelve day hike, injuries to his feet, assignment to Company I 141st Infantry 36th Division, and being near the front until just after the armistice. He asks for letters and hopes to return home soon.
Grand Rapids reader Mrs. Marshall gave Macbeth readings at Amo High. Amo beat Danville 33 to 15 Friday night. Seniors sold crackerjacks earning money for the treasury. Wilford Cummings joins the Senior class. Midyear exams set for Thursday and Friday. Marshall Entertainers slated for Monday evening at the assembly hall.
Fred Rice Roachdale postmaster disappeared last week with about $2000 in government funds and a young wife of a soldier in the office. The woman, 18 and wife of Clifton Shubert, was formerly Miss Maryloward of Greencastle and is now in charge of the office.
At the morning service last Sunday the church board kept W C Gilbert as superintendent and reappointed all school officers. An efficiency committee and an orchestra reorganization committee were chosen. A resolution aims for 100 in attendance by Valentine’s Day or the Sunday after, Feb 16.
A district gathering of the 15th Knights of Pythias will meet in Plainfield on Friday February 7. Hendricks county’s third rank team will confer the degrees in the afternoon and Putnam county team in the evening. The 15th district leads busy Indiana Knights this year.
The Herald notes the birth of a 9 pound boy named Marcellus Arthur to Mr and Mrs Lewis Hubble on Friday night. Mrs Hubble is remembered by readers as Miss Edna Nighols.
The Christian church has employed Rev. A. W. Conner of Indianapolis for 1919. He will preach on the third Sunday of each month and will begin next Sunday.

A letter from Corporal Frank Cosgrove of Bat A, 42nd Artillery Company Army notes trenches near No Man's Land and a short walk for souvenirs. He reveals he was promoted to corporal on the first of the month and sends best wishes to his father Paul and family with affectionate regards.

Maurice Sharp of the Green castle aviation corps writes his parents about a forthcoming long flight from the Texas field to Detroit Michigan in a few days He will travel by a light powered De Haviland stopping at Indianapolis Dayton and Detroit He may spend several days with his parents at Greencastle He previously demonstrated aerial stunts for Greencastle and Putnam county residents and is expected to pass over Coatesville en route to Dayton Also mention of Sunday dinner hosted by Mr Loyd Knight and Mrs Wisehart with Mr and Mrs J D L Vaughn and Mrs F H Wisehart present
Indiana's governor declares victory in war and urges urgent fundraising for Near East relief. He cites four million Christians and Jews in peril from starvation and Turkish massacres, calling for Indiana residents to donate $629,172 to save about 21,000 lives between January 25 and January 31.
The Killmore Cemetery Board seeks to condemn about three and a half acres of Newton Crift's land adjoining the cemetery in Putnam circuit court. The board offered 3250 per acre, while Crift asked 700. Judge Hughes ruled for the board and named appraisers John Clark Morris Goodwin and Charley Beaman to fix a price.
The body of a young colored soldier was found in a ditch along the Big Four railway near Hadley. Frozen in ice, the man appeared to have been there several days and may have fallen or been pushed from a train. Name shown as James W. Stokes, enlisted at 22, discharged December 30 in Helena Ark. A cash sum of 862 was found on the body, which lies in a Danville morgue.
Clayton and vicinity saw 100 new flu cases last week as the scourge arrives belatedly. A silver lining shows the current outbreak is milder than earlier in the season for the town and surrounding area.
