Attorneys Discuss Morgan County Court Move

Local attorneys push for a separate Morgan County circuit court or Morgan Clay counties superior court. A bar association committee, with Clay County colleagues, will lobby legislators. Fire Strikes Brosius Dry Goods Company in Brazil

Insurance adjusters assessed a 4000 loss from a Tuesday morning blaze at Brosius dry goods, with fire reigniting from a smoldering stockroom scene. The Mames spread quickly causing an additional 40000 loss. Brosius, the city’s largest store, held stock valued at 56000. Moore & Ferguson adjacent suffered about 86000 from water and smoke. Zeller’s building endured around 4000 damage. All losses reportedly insured.

Pneumonia Deaths Rise in January 1911

State Board of Health reports 57 more pneumonia deaths in January 1911 than January 1910. Total deaths last month 447, including 115 infants, 251 males and 206 females. Births in December 1910 totaled 4176 with 2121 males and 2055 females. White births 2075 males 2026 females colored 46 males 29 females. State birth rate 18.1 per 1000. Warren County highest at 34.8, Owen County lowest at 6.1.

Acquittal in Lawrence County Killing Trial

A Monroe county jury acquitted Dras Stannard of killing his father in law Marion Devene near Needmore last June after three ballots and a one hour deliberation. The verdict, read at 2 45 pm, followed witnesses detailing Devene’s quarrels and Stannard’s claim of self defense. Stannard plans to move with his family to California as his father is a wealthy farmer.
