Kokomo widow Martha Gammons, 113, judged incompetent to manage estate after daily court visits. Two-year-old Horace Warner died from phosphorus poisoning after chewing match heads. Noblesville girl Hazel Klob 13 died of pneumonia, noted for top class rank and height. Claims including Masten Lumber and Coal Co 445 Coatesville Herald printing 0 00 and others allowed. Treasurer reports 232 11 on hand November expenses 18 29 leaving 213 82. Auditing committee appointed to audit books and publish report for the year. Meeting adjourned.

The Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows, Tipton, wins the will dispute over the estate of Jhlias Plall. Nancy Plall’s challenge claimed the bequest should pass to the Orphans’ Home. the jury ruled for the Grand Lodge and Judge Nash denied a new trial.

Westville Marshal Resigns After Dry Town Incident

Westville in Laporte County faced a hush over a dry territory dispute when Marshal Brown, angered by a soft drink parlor, damaged the interior with lead and caused injury. Citizens demanded his resignation amid calls for a grand jury and a special election to replace him.

Eminence Man Found Guilty in Attempted Manslaughter

A circuit court jury convicted William George of Eminence of attempted manslaughter after he shot into a schoolhouse while intoxicated and wounded Edward Elliott and two others when detained. A plea of insanity was presented, and the judge recommended a suspended sentence.

Ten-Year-Old Rescues Girl From House Fire

Eddie Leininger, ten, rushed from his home to save Jennie Zdawczynski, eleven, whose clothing ignited near a base burner. He covered her with a carpet doormat to smother the flames, saving her from worse burns though his own hands were burned. Jennie was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Spelling Matches Date Set by State Superintendent

Charles Greathouse, state superintendent, named February 18 for district spelling matches that select eligibles for the state test in Indianapolis on March 30. District contests will follow in Evansville, Bloomington, Jeffersonville, Seymour, Brazil, Connerville, Tadithnapolis, Portland, Frankfurt, Monticello, Marion, Fort Wayne, and Heymoutha, organized by Robert J. Aley, former superintendent.

A large crowd gathered for the Ame Sunday afternoon meeting for men and women with Hon. M. F. Foley of Indianapolis as speaker on Good Citizenship. The Stilesville quartet performed and was praised, with 20 local attendees feeling well paid for the afternoon.

Lincoln letter prize linked to 1856 election bet case

Solon A. Miles keeps a Lincoln letter from 1887 while Lincoln toured as an attorney. The note concerns an $100 bet between Isaac Smith and George Moffet on Millard Fillmore votes in New York. Smith won the bet but not the buggy. John Smith bought the buggy and won the ensuing case. Smith appealed to the Supreme Court. Lincoln offered help but lost when the case reached the high court.

Publication in weekly Washington papers notes thirty applications for licenses with twenty issued in Washington and three at Montgomery. Officials will act on the applications after the election and districting by the council and White Pine committee is to proceed Monday, amid debate on the majority.

In Indianapolis a picked association team defeated Butler College 46 to 25. Hap Craigle scored fourteen field goals, three more than Butler’s total.
